Bernie Sanders Asks Trump’s Education Nominee If She’s Only Getting The Job Because She’s A Billionaire

President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial nominee for education secretary went before a Senate committee on Tuesday, where she faced tough questions from Democrats over her efforts to expand charter schools, her family’s political influence, and her positions on guns and sexual assault on campuses.

Betsy DeVos, a billionaire from one of Michigan’s most powerful Republican families, has spent years funding “school choice” efforts in her home state and around the country. Public education advocates and teacher unions have described her as a radical choice to be the face of federal education policy.

DeVos’ vast wealth figured prominently in the hearing. Her family, which made its fortune through Amway and is worth an estimated $ 5 billion, has been a major funder of charter school expansion, Republican candidacies and efforts to weaken labor unions. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) asked DeVos if she would have found herself there Tuesday if she wasn’t so rich.

“If you were not a multibillionaire … do you think that you would be sitting here today?” Sanders asked.

“I do think there would be that possibility,” DeVos responded. “I’ve worked very hard on behalf of parents and children.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) questioned DeVos about her qualifications to oversee student loans and distribute Pell grants. She asked DeVos if she or any of her children had ever had to take out a student loan to help pay for college.

“They have been fortunate not to,” DeVos noted.

Democrats said they were angry that they had not received a letter from the Office of Government Ethics saying it had completed a review of DeVos’ potential conflicts of interest. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) also said that DeVos had not complied with Democrats’ request to provide her last three years’ worth of tax returns in order to know where education policy may overlap with her family’s finances.

“I’m going to continue pushing for robust scrutiny of every one of these nominees,” Murray said. “I am extremely disappointed that we are moving forward with this hearing before receiving the proper paperwork from the Office of Government Ethics.” Under Obama, she said, “Republicans insisted on having an ethics letter in hand.”

Sen. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), the Republican chairman of the Committee on Health, Education Labor and Pensions, told senators that a vote on DeVos’ confirmation would not occur before a letter had been made public.

Several Democrats also griped to Alexander that they were being allotted five minutes apiece to quiz DeVos without the potential for follow-up questions. They characterized that as a break from the norm and an effort to rush Trump’s nominees through the Senate without adequate scrutiny.

“I think we’re selling our kids short,” Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) told Alexander.

“I think this is a real shame, this rush job,” said Sen. Christopher Murphy (D-Conn.).

Progressive Democrats have raised concerns not only about DeVos’ funding of charter efforts, but also her lack of experience in education. DeVos has never been a teacher or a school administrator, though she said Tuesday that she’d volunteered as a tutor at schools in Grand Rapids.

Democrat-turned-independent Joe Lieberman, a former senator from Connecticut, showed up at the hearing in an effort to allay those concerns and give DeVos some bipartisan credibility. Lieberman, who, like many left-leaning centrists, has supported the charter school movement, serves on the board of DeVos’ education reform group, American Federation for Children.

“Her nomination is naturally controversial. She has directly challenged the education establishment,” Lieberman said. “[But] in all my work for her, I have never heard Betsy speak against our public school system.”

At one point, DeVos didn’t seem familiar with federal law as it relates to students with disabilities. She said deference should be given to states in deciding whether schools meet special education requirements, prompting Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) to ask if she understood there was a federal civil rights law in place.

Plenty of Democrats wondered whether DeVos would try to undermine traditional public education and siphon money toward charter schools and private schools. (In 2001, DeVos and her husband, Dick, told a gathering of Christian philanthropists that they use their education donations in part to promote a conservative Christian worldview among kids.)

Murray said she wanted a “yes or no” answer from DeVos on a simple question: “Will you commit that you will not work to privatize, or cut funding” for public schools?

“I look forward, if confirmed, to [addressing] the needs of all students and parents,” DeVos responded. “I’m hopeful that we can work together and find common ground … and solve those issues.”

“I take that as not being willing to commit to not cutting funding,” Murray said.

“I wouldn’t characterize it in that way,” DeVos replied.

Alexander couched the controversy surrounding DeVos as a proxy fight over charter schools. Alexander said DeVos “deserves credit” for “using her wealth” to influence education policy. “Betsy DeVos is on our children’s side,” Alexander said. “I believe she is in the mainstream of public opinion, and her critics are not.”

One of the most tense exchanges came over the issue of gun violence. Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, asked DeVos if guns “have any place in or around schools.” Murphy’s state was home to the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, where a gunman shot and killed 20 children and six adults in Newtown in 2012.

DeVos said such questions should be left to states and localities.

“You can’t say definitively today that guns shouldn’t be in schools?” Murphy followed.

DeVos, referring to earlier comments from Sen. Mike Enzi (R) of Wyoming, said that some schools out West might need protection from bears. “I would imagine there is probably a gun in the school to protect from potential grizzlies,” she said.

Murphy said he “looked forward” to her discussing the issue in Connecticut sometime.

As expected, Democrats also quizzed DeVos on the issue of sexual assault on college campuses. Under Obama, the Education Department has launched scores of investigations into how college campuses have handled sexual assault allegations, arguing that such attacks and the response to them are a civil rights issue.

Some advocates of those policies are wondering if the Trump administration would scrap them. Democrats even had victims of sexual assault seated in the audience to underscore the issue.

DeVos likely did not quell their fears Tuesday.

Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) asked if she was willing to pledge to uphold Obama’s reforms related to sexual assault on college campuses. DeVos said it would be “premature” to make any such promises. When Murray pressed her along the same lines as Casey, she avoided answering.

“If confirmed, I commit that I will be looking very closely at how this has been regulated and handled, with great sensitivity to those who are victims, and considering perpetrators as well,” DeVos said.

A New Year, A New Chapter, A New You

2017-01-16-1484601083-5847386-hrdvsypffasaustinschmid.jpg

The start of the New Year has me thinking about endings, beginnings, and the paths we take to lead us from one chapter to the next. How did you choose your direction? How did you decide to be a botanist, a nurse, or a stay-at-home Dad? For some, life’s course comes naturally–as for those who know what they want to be as early as high school. For others, those decisions come hard–as for those of us who struggle to find our way until a midlife crisis leads us from one place to another.

For me, the certainty that I would wind up as a writer became apparent when I was quite young–though other ideas cropped up along the way. At one point, I dreamed of being a psychiatrist who could help people heal from the disease my mother suffered from. At another, I was sure I would be a horse breeder, spending my life on a farm with all sorts of animals, as I had at summer camp. But the passion for writing won out during my freshman year in college, and when I turned twenty-one I started my first book.

After two decades of writing fiction, at forty years old, I discovered–to my surprise–that I had something important to say about myself. I had a new grasp on all that had happened to me and all that I, at last, understood about my own history. A strong urge to express these revelations and my conclusions about them led me to memoir. I decided to jump genres.

Memoir requires a particular kind of courage–a willingness to open up emotionally and go public with your understanding of your life, rather than putting your experiences and ideas into the mouths of imaginary characters. This sort of writing is a challenge for me in many ways. First and foremost, it’s about “getting over” myself and learning how to be humble. Then there is conquering the fear of being vulnerable with an unknown host of others. Last but not least, there is the complicated matter of writing about people who are so integral to the experiences I am sharing with the world.

2017-01-16-1484581907-2120275-xzw66yayvbaalexwigan.jpg

I get questions from readers about all these issues regularly, and my answer to them is always the same simple truth: I am driven to reach out to others via what I have learned through my own life. I can’t flinch from writing about it. I often receive emails (or sometimes letters) from those who tell me that Searching for Mercy Street helped them to understand their parents better and to forgive the inevitable errors made while raising them. And others write to say that Half in Love has helped them to understand more about depression and suicide, or to move them to seek medical help, or to speak more frankly about their emotions with family–or just to take the risk of reaching out to me, a total stranger who might not answer, even though I seem to be a kindred spirit.

Every one of these reactions makes the fear of baring my soul to the world worthwhile, and this is what fulfills me. It puts into perspective any desire for better sales figures or stellar reviews. In the end, affecting other people with my writing is all that matters to me, and I’m grateful that my life allows me to pursue such a goal.

I have known many who have scrambled for a long time before being able to make a mid-life decision to go in a new direction. One who left a flourishing law practice to write; one who ditched the security of a being a physician to take the risk of becoming a Silicon Valley entrepreneur; one who took years away from her career in journalism to sail the world with her husband and young children; one who decided to become a stay-at-home Dad so that his wife could pursue her dream; one who conquered depression over being childless and adopted instead; one who went back to school at age forty to become a minister.

The changes these people created for themselves required enormous bravery and a willingness to take a leap of faith. I admire them immensely. They gave me the guts to make yet another shift in my professional life, one over which I had been hesitating. Although it was not dissatisfaction that pushed me to leave the genre that I loved, however temporarily, at the outset of 2015 I tackled fiction once again. I chose to start a novel in spite of my insecurity and fear about critics who sometimes judge that my memoirs are my best efforts. But, of course, the decision was softened by the fact that I was lucky enough to be able to continue using my own personal stories in my newsletters, blogs and articles.

We might all look for inspiration, as I did twice, in the examples of the others I’ve written about above–particularly if we are unhappy with wherever life has led us thus far. The advent of a new year is the perfect time to try something fresh. Summon up your courage and unleash whatever it is that fires you up.

Duchess Kate Nails Why People Don’t Seek Mental Health Help

The Duchess of Cambridge is yet again schooling the world on negative mental health stereotypes.

The duchess, along with Prince William and Prince Harry, spoke out about how stigma prevents people with mental illness from seeking support. The brief speech by the former Kate Middleton was part of an event in London on Tuesday for Heads Together, the royals’ mental health charity.

“The challenge that so many people have is not knowing how to take that first step of reaching out to another person for help. Admitting that they are not coping,” she said. “Fear, or reticence, or a sense of not wanting to burden another, means that people suffer in silence ― allowing the problem to grow larger and larger unchecked.

Kate couldn’t have summed it up better. Too often shame silences those with a mental health condition. And what’s worse is that it could be damaging to that person’s health: Research shows that the misconceptions surrounding behavioral health conditions often stand in the way of people getting professional treatment.

Approximately one in four adults globally experience a mental health issue in a given year. That number increases when you factor in children. Experts say anxiety disorders among kids are one of the most common pediatric problems

This is another mental health issue the royals are hoping to tackle. Last year, Kate penned an essay for The Huffington Post U.K. where she addressed the consequences that come with ignoring a child’s psychological well-being.

“The mental health of our children must be seen as every bit as important as their physical health,” she wrote. “For too long we have been embarrassed to admit when our children need emotional or psychiatric help, worried that the stigma associated with these problems would be detrimental to their futures.”

If we’re being honest, we could listen to this family talk about mental health all day. Keep it up, guys!

Keith Ellison Will Boycott Inauguration Over Trump’s Insult Of Rep. John Lewis

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), a leading candidate to chair the Democratic National Committee, said Monday he would not attend the presidential inauguration in protest of President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about the civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.).

Ellison revealed his decision in a series of tweets.

Ellison joins a growing number of House Democrats boycotting the inauguration. Some had decided not to attend before Trump attacked Lewis over the weekend. But the number of Democrats shunning the ceremonies has since ballooned to more than two dozen.

Lewis, who famously was beaten by police during a 1965 march in Selma, Alabama, that came to be known as Bloody Sunday, said during an NBC interview broadcast Friday that he regards Trump’s presidency as illegitimate and won’t attend the inauguration.

“I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president,” Lewis told Chuck Todd, host of NBC’s “Meet The Press.” “I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected and they have destroyed the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.”

Trump responded with several tweets attacking Lewis, claiming the Atlanta congressman was “all talk, talk, talk ― no action or results.”

Ellison is scheduled to attend Democratic power broker David Brock’s gathering of party fundraisers, strategists and other leaders in Florida on Saturday. Four other DNC candidates also are to appear at the meeting, which Brock bills as an attempt to build a liberal counterweight to the Koch brothers’ political donor network, according to BuzzFeed.

Ellison had planned to attend the inauguration until Trump erupted at Lewis, said Brett Morrow, a spokesman for Ellison’s DNC campaign.

Labor Secretary Tom Perez, also a candidate for DNC chair, won’t attend the inauguration, either, according to spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa. Hinojosa did not immediately respond to a request for clarification about Perez’s reasons.

Ellison, co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and an early backer of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid, hopes to lead the DNC as it rebuilds after the party’s 2016 election losses. He enjoys the support of not only Sanders and many of his top backers, but key Clinton advocates, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Perez, whose time as labor secretary and head of the Department of Justice civil rights division have made him a progressive star in his own right, has the backing of four Democratic governors and several labor unions. President Barack Obama has all but endorsed him.

In addition to Ellison and Perez, the DNC race includes South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg; New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Ray Buckley; South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Jaime Harrison; Idaho Democratic Party Executive Director Sally Boynton-Brown; and media strategist Jehmu Greene.

The DNC’s 447 voting members will select the next chair on Feb. 25 in Atlanta.

The Huffington Post will host a debate between the DNC candidates on Wednesday in Washington.

How To Recover From Blogger Burnout In 3 Easy Ways

What Happens When You Step Away

What happens when you’ve slowed down on social media to truly reflect where you’re heading with your business?

What happens when you lose the flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter anymore?

What happens when you feel stuck?

You haven’t spoken up in over 2 months and we all know that is forever in the online world. You’ve not posted on all your social media platforms, You haven’t recorded a video, You’ve not showed up in your own FB group! What happens to your self-esteem and your confidence when these actions take place. Well, I should really ask what happens to your self-esteem and confidence when nothing has taken place or when you are sucked into this idea that you have to be online 24-7 in order to make a dollar? Well, it can be pretty depressing to know or should I rather say “think” that you have to start all over.

“Truth is being on social media all the time does not equate to running a business or conducting business activity”

You didn’t always feel this way…You actually had some rhyme or reason to what you were doing months before but somehow you’ve experienced something called burnout. That’s what it is. I hate this term burnout. It feels so cliche, it feels like I crashed and burned and there’s no return. There’s no getting back up. But really with all these emotions and thoughts there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lesson to be learned and taught to others.

So…let me revisit those questions and share with you my answer.

What can happen when you’ve slowed down on social media?

For starters you get to reflect where you were/are heading with your business… So in my book, amazing things can happen! You begin to have a new sense of confidence and clarity. You can find a new sense of commitment to your goals and what you stand for in your business. You can begin to find your own voice again. You know what when you are constantly online being bombarded by everyone else’s messages you can begin to sound like or imitate someone you really admire. But guess what? You aren’t that person so this time away can bring about a uniqueness in you, and difference in you where you begin to stand out more in your own niche in this sea of online businesses.

What can happen when you lose your flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

Realistically you haven’t lost your flow…you had it scheduled once before. If you scheduled it before I’m sure you can refer back to your old schedule but this time with a breath of fresh ideas and opinions. You can find it on a piece of paper a word document, one of your planners. Start looking back and re-evaluating what you were doing before the burnout. You may just be in a bit of a funk…YOU personally and internally may not be in a flow but that’s ok. Begin to reconnect with your creator first, with the God who created you and listen in to your spirit and where He would have you begin. He’s given you a message for others and you know you gotta get it out to the masses. Start small. Start with an inspirational photo, feel free to reintroduce yourself. Do whatever feels right to you but whatever you do never give up because you lost your flow or feel like you don’t know where to start. I can help with that…I hope this blog post is helping with that now.

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter?

Well honey, this is more of an internal thing. If you are feeling like your voice won’t matter then guess what…it won’t. It’s not for you to determine how your story will connect with others. It’s not for you to give a consensus on the wonderful message imparted within you. Nope you don’t get to judge your message before sharing with others.

When I stepped outside of my own comfort zone and began to share my story and share what I stood for, guess what. I got an astounding…”That was powerful”. This was a mindset shift that I was sharing with other women in my group.

Did you know that I re-edited and re-edited and stressed over this message for days before I put it out. Your voice is your message and when you share it just know if you’ve touched one person you’ve done your job!!!

Conclusion

Whether you are recovering from “Burn Out” or currently experiencing it as you read this post, it’s important to remember that business is a journey and there is no race to the finish line. Brands continually evolve and grow just like we do as people. Sometimes that growth may feel stunted and other times you may experience a growth spurt. But most importantly, building a business is a journey through personal development.

Learning more about yourself and allowing your commitment to shine through regardless of where you think you should be in business are important steps to showing up and serving others through your business.

Don’t Repeal Me, Please!

I am luckier than most. After 20 years of having multiple sclerosis I am still relatively healthy. I have a spot on my foot which is mildly numb most of the time and markedly numb when I have an exacerbation. This is damage I got from not treating an exacerbation with steroid therapy. Sometimes when I am dancing I can feel weakness in my legs, but I still dance. I will always dance. Heat and I have a love/hate relationship. I love a sauna in January. That first sweat is such a cleansing feeling. But a prolonged heat wave in summer will sap me like an iPhone battery. I have extreme vertigo whenever I ride a canoe, an amusement ride, or a swing at the playground with my son. These are things I no longer do. They do not effect my quality of life. Life has so much more to offer than amusement rides.

I can go through long periods of remission. Sometimes years. There are times when I am strong. I can haul 50 lb. bales of hay, show a cow who is boss. But when life is stressful, like say after a divorce or economic insecurity, the stress can be too much and I get sick.

It is my pre-existing condition. There have been times when I have not had health insurance. When the divorce papers were signed by the judge I lost the health insurance I had with my husband. I was only working a part time job. My state, Maine, had not expanded medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. I fell into this bubble. One that with just a small bump in income of a couple thousand dollars would qualify me for the ACA.

Sometimes when I feel an exacerbation start I have this feeling in my head that someone else is driving this body. Simple tasks such as shoveling a car out in winter will feel like epic adventures requiring more effort than this body is capable of. Thinking becomes clouded. The only upside I can see is the extreme cleaning my house will have after five days of IV cortico-steroid therapy. Lemonade.

So it was in a March, after a long winter of extreme weather, car troubles, and a steady eye on my bottom line that I could feel the disjointed arrival of an exacerbation. I had no health insurance. A call to my neurologist set up the IV therapy. I arranged to have the medication before I went to work every day. I have a job that does not pay sick time. When I showed up at the registration desk at the hospital they helped me sign up for uncompensated care. The debt from the steroids would have been unmanageable on a 15,000 a year income. So, yes, your tax dollars paid for my medicine. Thank you.

It would be another six months of working multiple jobs before I finally got a raise in pay and enough hours of work to qualify for the ACA. For my family of two that magic number is 18,000 a year. I just squeak by. If I make just a little less than this I can lose my health insurance again because Maine still has a governor who will not expand medicaid. I signed up for a silver plan with a 250.00 deductible. I received a subsidy which means that my monthly payment was 10.00 a month. I have re-enrolled for 2017 and that monthly payment has gone up to 45.00 a month. Still affordable.

But all this may just be moot.

I want to trust that we have leaders that are going to make sure that I can get the care I need without the worry of crushing debt. I want to trust that when, not if, I get sick again I can treat the illness and forestall any damage it may do to my nervous system, so I can keep walking, so I can see.

I know for insurance companies, members of congress, think tanks, and governors my story is just a number. It probably does not make a blip on their radar. When people become numbers to the policy makers the real life consequences must seem abstract. My life is so far removed from the desk that pens these laws. But a repeal without a reasonable replacement seems like poor political decision making to me. I follow the news everyday. I watch a Congress dismantle the very thing that has insured an element of economic security to a life I have worked hard to rebuild after divorce. The glee with which this has happened does not promote much confidence or trust. I want to trust we have leaders. I want to trust. I’m just not sure I can.

Donald Trump Says Refugee Crisis And Threats To UK Identity Drove Brexit

In a wide-ranging interview with the Times of London on Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump said he believes the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union “is going to end up being a great thing” and argued that threats to British identity were a main reason the UK voted to leave the union.

“People, countries want their own identity and the UK wanted its own identity,” Trump told the paper.

Trump also cited the migration crisis as a primary cause for Britain backing Leave in the June referendum.

“I believe others will leave,” he added. “People don’t want to have other people coming in and destroying their country.”

Some pro-Brexit politicians, such as Trump ally and former UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage, played to nationalist sentiment and fears over the refugee crisis in their campaign to leave the EU. In the lead-up to the vote, Farage drew widespread condemnation across party lines for unveiling a poster showing a long line of migrants and refugees, with the implication that the UK couldn’t control its borders.

The UK actually resettled a very small number of refugees in the migrant crisis compared with other European nations. Even before voting for Brexit, the UK also had the power to opt out of EU asylum policy and refugee resettlement plans.

On Friday, President Barack Obama’s envoy to the EU Anthony Gardner said that he believed Farage had misled Trump and his transition team on EU politics. Gardner said encouraging Brexit and the breakup of the EU would be “folly” and hurt American interests.

The interview with the Times of London took place at Trump Tower, where Trump spoke with UK Conservative Party politician Michael Gove ― who himself campaigned for Brexit and made a failed bid to become British prime minister following the referendum. In other parts of the interview, Trump criticized German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s asylum policy, claimed he was open to negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin to reduce nuclear arms and described Russia’s intervention into Syria as “a very bad thing.”

Trump also promised to pursue a trade deal with the UK once in office, according to the Times of London. In footage from the interview, however, Trump appears to dodge a question from Gove asking if Britain is “at the front of the queue” in terms of trade talks. Trump responds by saying, “I think you are doing great,” in an apparent reference to the UK.

Trump initially came out in support for Britain leaving the EU in May, when polls indicated that Britons would vote to stay in the economic bloc. During his campaign, Trump said people would call him “Mr. Brexit” for his ability to defy polling that indicated he would handily lose the U.S. election.

The UK has been mired in a period of political and economic instability after the Brexit referendum, as its government attempts to formulate a plan for how to exit the EU. The British Pound has plummeted since the vote, losing almost 20 percent of its pre-Brexit value against the U.S. dollar.

Where is HOME?

A good friend of mine shared a question posed by guitarist, Chris Wood on her Facebook page:

“Bob Dylan described eloquently how his music has been the quest to get home. Now as much as ever feels like a good time to ask you; what feels like home to you? Are you there already or do you still have a way to go?”

On the same day, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran released a new song called “Castle on the Hill”. The song retraces the singer’s youth, returning to his former home and recalling his memories en route.

I grew up in a small rural town called Penrith in Cumbria, England. It’s a tourist town situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park. I return periodically but I’ve realised over the years how my fond memories are stored in music rather than the place itself.

I consider Penrith to be my home but every time I return I feel more distant, more disconnected. Maybe what I search for is my youth – to remember Penrith as I did back then and feel the way the town made me feel then – but lately it seems empty, soulless. The only way I can get that feeling back is by listening to music that reminds me of when it was my home. That works, then I miss it, then it feels like home again.

When my mind traces back through all the places I’ve lived, they each have songs associated with the memories. In that sense, each place feels like home. There’s a nostalgic pull to every dwelling for different reasons and different songs. For some, scents can also trigger memories of places they consider home.

But where is home? Is it the house or town you grew up in or the house or town where you raised your family? Maybe it’s the place you felt most loved or perhaps the place you gave most love to. How does our heart identify home?

For many, home is more than a memory. For refugees, home is their country; for the street children in Brazil and India, home is wherever they feel safest.

So are we all constantly striving to find home? Do creative people, like Bob Dylan, find sanctuary in their work?

I’ve spent hours pondering an answer to Chris Wood’s question and feel no definitive place as my home. The house where I live now, and watched my family grow, is my home but Penrith is my home town. Maybe I am still on that quest to go home, but I fear that home was a moment in time…

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on what you consider home and why, so please comment below.

Democrats Lead Nationwide Day Of Rallies In Defense Of Obamacare

Supporters of the Affordable Care Act gathered to protest the health care law’s repeal in rallies across the country on Sunday.

The demonstrations were in response to an appeal by Democratic leaders in Congress for a day of action against ACA repeal, the defunding of Planned Parenthood and other policies promoted by the incoming Donald Trump administration.

Perhaps the highest-profile gathering was a rally at Macomb County Community College in Warren, Michigan, that drew thousands of people. Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and several other members of Congress addressed the large crowd that had waited in long lines in below-freezing weather to attend the event. Many who have received health insurance thanks to the ACA shared their emotional stories as well.

When Sanders finally took the stage after his colleagues, the roar of the audience and chants of “Bernie, Bernie Bernie” made it clear that for many in the crowd, the Vermont senator was the main attraction. Sanders’ political action nonprofit, “Our Revolution,” live-streamed the event on YouTube and Facebook.

“This is the wealthiest country in the history of the world,” Sanders said. “It is time we got our national priorities right. The United States today and I hope everybody in America understands it: We are the only major country on Earth not to guarantee health care to all people as a right!”

True to his democratic socialist form, Sanders, who won an upset victory against Hillary Clinton in the Great Lakes State presidential primary, went beyond defending the ACA.

“So our job today is to defend the Affordable Care Act. Our job tomorrow is to create a Medicare-for-all, single-payer system,” he exhorted the crowd.

There were some 70 similar rallies across the country, according to Sanders. Photos on social media show significant crowds in Portland, Maine; Richmond, Virginia; Tampa, Florida; Boston, New York City and many other metropolises.

Other grassroots efforts suggest that the prospect of the ACA being repealed is finally mobilizing Democrats and their allies to take unified, concerted action.

The progressive organizations MoveOn.org, the Working Families Party and People’s Action reported that they were holding 500 “resist Trump” meetings on Sunday.

And on Saturday, over 100 people angry about ACA repeal packed Republican Rep. Mike Coffman’s constituent meeting in Aurora, Colorado. It was a scene that resembled past politically effective moments of protest, including the raucous anti-ACA town hall meetings in the summer of 2009.

Coffman only let people speak to him in groups of four at a time, then sneaked out a side entrance earlier than the event officially ended.

Head over here to learn about protest events scheduled for inauguration day this Friday.

FDR and the Spanish Civil War

FDR and the Spanish Civil War

What was the relationship between President Franklin D. Roosevelt, architect of America’s rise to global power, and the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War, which inspired passion and sacrifice, and shaped the road to world war? While many historians have portrayed the Spanish Civil War as one of Roosevelt’s most isolationist episodes, Dominic Tierney argues that it marked the president’s first attempt to challenge fascist aggression in Europe. Drawing on newly discovered archival documents, Tierney describes the evolution of Roosevelt’s thinking about the Spanish Civil War in relation to America’s broader geopolitical interests, as well as the fierce controversy in the United States over Spanish policy. Between 1936 and 1939, Roosevelt’s perceptions of the Spanish Civil War were transformed. Initially indifferent toward which side won, FDR became an increasingly committed supporter of the leftist government. He believed that German and Italian intervention in Spain was part of a broader program of fascist aggression, and he worried that the Spanish Civil War would inspire fascist revolutions in Latin America. In response, Roosevelt tried to send food to Spain as well as illegal covert aid to the Spanish government, and to mediate a compromise solution to the civil war. However unsuccessful these initiatives proved in the end, they represented an important stage in Roosevelt’s emerging strategy to aid democracy in Europe.

Perpetual Political War

The Trump slump has begun. Trump has less public support than any President-elect on record. Only 44 percent of Americans say they approve of Trump’s handling of the presidential transition, according to Gallup. That number is going down. It was 48 percent a month ago.

Compare that with George W. Bush, who took office in January 2001 after the fiercely disputed Florida recount. Bush started out with 61 percent support. Bill Clinton won the 1992 election with 43 percent of the popular vote in a three-way split with President George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot. Clinton’s transition rating: 68 percent approval.

Honeymoon? Forget it. Only 37 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Trump in this month’s Quinnipiac poll. Most Americans don’t like Trump.

There is only one way Trump can survive: perpetual political war. He got elected by dividing the country. It was not exactly the old division, left versus right. Trump provoked a populist-elitist division by fiercely attacking the cosmopolitan ruling class. “There is nothing that the political establishment will not do, no lie that they won’t tell, to hold their prestige and power at your expense,” he told a rally in Florida in October.

Resentment of intellectuals and educated elites is an old theme in U.S. politics, going all the way back to Andrew Jackson. Trump exploited it relentlessly. He ended up carrying non-college educated white voters by better than two to one.

The cultural elite’s response to Trump? Contempt. Actress Meryl Streep denounced Trump as a “bully” for his “instinct to humiliate” the less fortunate. Trump’s response? Defiance. He called Streep “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood” and “a Hillary flunky who lost big.” Contempt versus defiance. That is likely to be the prevailing mode of political discourse for the next four years.

Given the interference in the election by Russia and the FBI, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) told NBC News, “I don’t see this President-elect as a legitimate President.” Trump’s response via Twitter: “Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime-infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results.”

A former Hillary Clinton campaign strategist said on MSNBC, “What would be great is if [Trump] started conducting himself in a way that’s consistent with the manner of all preceding Presidents. . . . Stop hurling insults. Stop hurling tweets.” Trump’s response? A defiant tweet: “What are Hillary Clinton’s people complaining about with respect to the FBI? Based on the information they had, she should never have been allowed to run — guilty as hell.”

For Trump to survive, two conditions must hold. Republicans have to keep their majorities in Congress, and Trump’s supporters have to stand by him. His supporters can threaten any Republican in Congress who opposes or even criticizes the President with a serious primary challenge.

Trump knows how to rally his army. He has weaponized social media. Twitter nurtures populism. It enables Trump to bypass the news media and communicate directly with his people, who regard the media as a despised elite. As President, Trump has to continue tweeting to keep his populist following on a war footing.

A revenge cycle is underway in American politics. The minute Barack Obama took office in 2009, conservatives organized a resistance movement. The Tea Party sprang into existence a few weeks after Obama’s inauguration. Its mission was to oppose and obstruct everything Obama tried to do.

Now a resistance movement is emerging among progressive Democrats. Its mission is to everything Trump tries to do. Big city Democratic mayors say they will refuse to cooperate with efforts to deport immigrants who seek refuge in their cities. Democratic state officials are organizing to do the same thing Republican state officials did when Obama was President — go to court to challenge the federal government’s constitutional authority to pass laws they find objectionable.

The California legislature is retaining Eric Holder, Obama’s former attorney general, to represent them in legal confrontations with the Trump Administration. “Having the former attorney general of the United States brings us a lot of firepower in order to prepare to safeguard the values of the people of California,” the Democratic leader of the state senate said.

The Democratic National Committee is setting up a “war room” to fight President Trump — a research and communications operation aimed at rallying opposition to his policies, exposing his conflicts of interest and challenging his factual distortions.

You thought the 2016 campaign was over? It was actually the opening salvo of a war that’s likely to go on for years. Trump thrives on division. The Trump slump doesn’t threaten him as long as his army is ready to fight at his command.

12 Things Every ‘Type A’ Person Wants You To Know

2017-01-12-1484257821-2930246-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP.jpeg

Robert Frost once said, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” He certainly wasn’t thinking about Type A people when he said that. They barrel into the office like they’re racing for a pot of gold, and they never seem to lose momentum. It’s as if they’re driven by a motor that never shuts off.

We each have our own understanding of what it means to have a Type A personality, but what does this term really mean and where did it come from? It actually started in a waiting room shared by a pair of cardiologists. The doctors noticed that their chairs didn’t have wear on the backs as expected–the wear was only visible on the front edge of the seats and the armrests, suggesting that patients were literally waiting on the edge of their seats, ready to jump up the second their names were called.

So, the cardiologists–Doctors Friedman and Rosenman–wanted to find out if the strange wear pattern on their chairs was because impatient people are more prone to heart disease. They discovered that their hunch was correct. They also found that people’s personalities tend to lean in one of two directions, which they labeled Type A and Type B.

2017-01-12-1484257884-1847761-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP2.jpeg

Most think of Type A people as driven and highly strung and Type B people as carefree and even-keeled, but there’s so much more to it. Type As, in particular, are often misunderstood, as we just don’t understand the motivation behind their behavior.

To fully grasp what it means to be Type A, you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t take my word for it–let’s see what they have to say:

1. We believe that winning is the only option.
We’re really hard on ourselves. Our desire to do our best often morphs into a desire to be the best. After all, if someone else does something better than us, then we mustn’t have been trying hard enough, right? This ensures that even the most mundane activities become a competition.

2. We live and die by our goals.
We don’t do anything “just because.” There’s an end aim for everything. That morning cup of coffee? The goal is to wake up. Half an hour of Pokemon Go at lunch? It’s about squeezing in some exercise and capturing more Pokemon than our friend down the hall. Heaven help anyone who slows us down or gets in our way. We’re nothing if we don’t reach our goals.

3. We’re always stressed.
Achieving our goals is so important to us that we often get stressed out about our progress. It’s that specter of wasted time or missed opportunities hanging over our heads that gets us all riled up, which can be really hard on our emotional intelligence (EQ).

4. We squeeze something into every possible moment. It may seem hypocritical that we’re sometimes late even though the rest of the time we’re impatiently drumming our fingers, waiting for meetings to start on time. The problem is that we try to squeeze a task into every possible minute, and sometimes we overdo it. In our determination to avoid downtime, we sometimes inadvertently create downtime for other people.

5. We want you to get to the point.
Skip the long preamble; if we have questions, we’ll ask. There’s no need to waste time on the setup when you have something important to tell us–just tell us. The theme here is efficiency; we’re interested in hearing the main points so we can begin taking action.

6. We hate to wait. We don’t hate being stuck at a red light or cooling our heels in a doctor’s waiting room because we think we’re too good to wait. We just like to be efficient with our time and don’t like things getting in our way. Every minute spent waiting is a minute we could have spent doing something productive. It’s a minute that we’ll never get back.

7. We’re conscientious.
Like “later,” “good enough” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Things are either right or they’re wrong. And they always, always have to be right. No matter what we’re doing, we care too much to settle for mediocrity.

8. We multitask. We’re not being rude, and we’re not bored. We just have a sense that the value of our day is measured by how much we get done, and we accomplish more when we do two (or more!) things at once.

9. We have a tough time relaxing. Relaxation isn’t a measurable goal, and it feels like a waste of time when nothing is getting done. It’s very difficult for us to sit around and “just be”; instead, we prefer to be actively “becoming” whatever lies at the end of our current ambition. Anything else amounts to lost time.

10. We have an unrealistic sense of urgency. From our perspective, “now” is the only time that exists. There’s no sense in putting something off till another time. While that’s often a good thing, we tend to give trivial issues a greater sense of urgency than they deserve.

11. We follow a schedule. Our time is carefully orchestrated so that each day we accomplish what we intended. Again like “later,” “whenever” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Everything gets scheduled and added to lists, and we take great satisfaction in ticking all the boxes.

12. We’re restless. Our motors are always running, so when we have to idle, that excess energy manifests in various nervous habits, such as fidgeting or biting our nails. Don’t worry, we’re not freaking out. This is normal behavior for us.

Bringing It All Together

We know that we can be awfully hard on everybody, but we’re even harder on ourselves. This may be difficult to see because no one else is privy to the perfectionist that’s goading or berating our every move inside our heads. Just know this: We care–we care a lot–and we really are sorry if our personality makes us hard to get along with sometimes.

What other characteristics set Type A people apart? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

What Happens Next?

Seldom if ever has the pending inauguration of a new American President provided such a bewildering and uncertain array of possible consequences. There are as many areas of danger in Trump’s threats and promises as there are circles of Hell in Dante’s Inferno. For openers, the President-elect has promised to escalate the two most serious threats to the survival of our human species: global warming and a renewed nuclear arms race. As America’s social, political, and cultural appeal declines in the rest of the world, and its military interventions continue to fail, there is a strong temptation to build the “killer app” nuclear weapon system that would give the American Century another hundred years of dominance.

The environment is quite a different story. The appointment of climate change deniers and fossil fuel industry champions to various key positions, including the Environmental Protection Agency, nearly guarantees that no further progress will be made at the federal level. Meanwhile, ordinary people and many businesses will continue, along with states and cities, to adopt green energy alternatives because they address the global warming calamity and, in many instances, are already competitive with conventionally generated power.

Changing the Rules

Trade and immigration are high on Trump’s list. Regarding immigration, on which American agriculture, upper-middle-class households, and high-tech businesses all depend, Trump has left himself plenty of room to back down–recognizing that there are lots of “terrific” immigrants, as well as the “very bad” ones. Moreover, states and cities have already taken an aggressive position to resist the enforcement of massive deportations of usefully employed immigrants that have already been happening under the Obama administration.

Trade is less clear with respect to the constraints on the new President’s behavior. Presidents have unusual authority to slap punitive tariffs or bans on imports. The principal obstacle to doing this is the havoc it would play with American companies and American jobs. Many things “made in America” are made with components which are manufactured outside the U.S. And more than half of all the goods America imports from China are actually made in China entirely by American companies or by their partnerships with Chinese counterparts. Sudden punitive tariffs or embargoes would leave American workers, consumers, and businesses howling in anger.

In the short run, disruptions of trade between America and other countries would have substantial negative economic effects in both the United States and its trade partners. If the disruptions continued, the long-run impact would likely be worst for the U.S. and its immediate neighbors, while other countries, most notably China, could end up accelerating their growing shares of world trade and international investment. An anti-trade policy that effectively leaves China to the Chinese and America to the Americans would only accelerate the rates at which the U.S. is declining and China advancing. It is also quite possible that continued strength in the dollar versus other currencies could cause severe economic problems in emerging markets and elsewhere, as happened in the late 1990s and several times in the 1980s.

The Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, has been the obsessively hated demon of the Tea Party and most of the Republican Party since it was first proposed. But early signals, including Trump’s comments after his initial and only meeting with President Obama, and statements from numerous Republicans, suggest that outright repeal is now correctly perceived as a low probability event. Obamacare has generally preserved the uniquely expensive American way of providing healthcare, with government-protected monopolies and subsidies for drug- and medical device-makers. It appears that the new Congress will “repeal” most of the Affordable Care Act but with a delayed effective date, by which time a new system will have to be in place. Given the overwhelming evidence on what has and has not worked here and elsewhere, as well as the current sensitivity of public opinion to the arrogantly utilized monopoly pricing power of drug companies, it is conceivable that the new Republican healthcare plan could be an improvement.

The other target at which Republicans love to throw darts is the Dodd-Frank Act, which set out to reform the U.S. financial industry and restrict predatory behavior toward borrowers, depositors, and investors. However, the final product incorporates many of the problems it was intended to solve, particularly the complex and obscure accounting standards that have enabled banks and insurance companies to outsmart regulators and investors. Most of the problems of the financial crisis in 2008 had to do with the impenetrably confusing complexity of new financial instruments that seemed to be designed for the sole purpose of facilitating fraud. There is considerable sentiment among ranking Republicans on the relevant Congressional committees, along with many other conservative thinkers, to replace this complexity with a single and simple measure of risk. An equally simple proposal from the same quarters would impose a steep progressive tax on the total assets of financial institutions, encouraging them to voluntarily split themselves up and discouraging others from growing too large, hence potentially ending the “too big to fail” blackmail under which banks grow and profit only to be bailed out by taxpayers when they ultimately fail. All the same, protection for ordinary consumers from financial services fraud is likely to be severely reduced.

It is also at least possible, based on Trump’s rhetoric and the Republican platform, that anti-trust policy could be brought back from the dead. American corporations and their international counterparts have been on a merger binge for nearly fifty years, resulting in the growth of oligopoly and monopoly pricing power in almost every industry, from airlines to drug stores to pharmaceuticals to broadcasting. If a change in policy goes beyond helping his friends and punishing his enemies, this could be a very positive feature of Trump’s administration.

Broad economic policy is likely to be more active and supportive of growth since one party now controls the White House, Congress and, don’t forget, the Supreme Court. Much of the stimulus, in the form of renewed tax cuts for the highest income earners, will be morally and socially repugnant and will have very limited positive impact on the broad economy. But there is a long history of support among conservatives for various tax arrangements that benefit the working poor, such as earned income tax credits and negative income taxes that are likely to appear in the final Republican tax package. Moreover, increased infrastructure spending is a likely component of increased fiscal stimulus and a consequence of one-party rule in Washington. This is both beneficial to lower income workers and an effective economic stimulus in the present, as well as a source of stronger growth in the future.

An increase in the federal minimum wage will almost certainly remain, as it has been, on hold. But this is yet another area where recent progress has come primarily from states and cities, which are likely to continue reflecting widespread voter concern about the huge contrast in the incomes of rich and poor Americans.

War is Hell

We have not yet journeyed through all nine circles of Dante’s Hell, including the assaults on civil rights of every kind; however, not to try your patience further, we can conclude with war, which in the words of General Sherman, is hell itself. As in the mid-1930s, much of the world is already engulfed in active warfare. And, also as in the 1930s, many aggressions and atrocities have met little countervailing force–from the American-backed assault by Saudi Arabia on Yemen, to Russia’s seizures of portions of Georgia and Ukraine, to the free-for-all incursions in the Syrian civil war by many countries including the U.S. and Russia. Trump’s and Putin’s mutual admiration is a wild card in the escalation of violence in Ukraine and beyond. If Putin perceives Trump as naïve and inexperienced, that might encourage further bloodshed. If he sees him as irrational and impulsive, that might be a deterrent to any provocation. If he sees him as someone who is willing to respect Russia, that might put at least a temporary end to Russian territorial aggression. Given that we simply do not know the answers to these questions, the risk of continued expansion of wars and invasions has to be considered high.

Winter is a three-month period of time that represents a pause in the activity of life. Great lakes, ponds, and streams freeze over; the earth grows hard and unreceptive. Tree sap stops flowing. Even the air becomes dense, slow to move, and heat stealing. Yet, not everything is as it appears to be!

The pervasive stillness and deep silence of winter are powers every bit as great as are the explosive forces of spring and summer, only different. After all, what is a glacier but a vast frozen river crawling its way through time? Both are forms of water whose unstoppable might can carve their way through solid rock! So, how can we channel this power of winter and use it to let go of whatever stands between us and the higher life we desire?

Winter is the time of the year when the forces of nature assume their most passive form. But we are discovering here that passive does not mean powerless! Consider the micro-pause between each beat of the heart. Is the heart less alive, made less potent for the brief rest it takes in its own beating? Of course not! In each such moment of its repose we could just as easily say that it is gathering itself for its next pulsation. In other words, its temporary passive state is actually a measured act of preparation. So it is with the “heart” of winter.

The better we understand this unique power of being passive–and how it serves as the secret consort of all things active–the more we grow in the faith we need to be wisely passive toward whatever fears remain in us about letting go of our false self. This is why, during the dark days of winter, we should take time each day–as often as possible–to quietly return to the living Light that dwells in the center of ourselves.

By gathering our attention in this way, and bringing the whole of ourselves into the heart of this interior stillness, we not only collect our own forces, as nature herself is doing, but much more: in this deliberate act of gathering ourselves–and for the conscious sense of quiet contentment we find within it–we are also being released from the false idea that the source of our strength and security can be found somewhere outside us.

The great French author, philosopher, and Nobel Prize winner, Albert Camus, knew the power of this truth now revealed. He also realized its liberating potential. In the following carefully chosen words, see how beautifully he tells us not to fear any season of life wherein we find ourselves feeling empty, alone, or without any Light in our life. He writes: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer.”

Once we start to see, to know in our innermost heart, that life itself is already complete, we can let go of whatever–or whoever–would have us believe otherwise.

Old attachments and their long-standing aches are now seen for being what they have always been: appendages of days gone by, worthless to the Higher Self we have agreed to become and by whose stillness we realize this need for a wholly new valuation of our own soul.

Now is the season to die to discontent, to withdraw our consent to live with any thoughts or feelings that would convince us it’s necessary to live in conflict or confusion.

The winter season can be the most challenging in terms of learning to channel its powers to help us let go. But, we may also have this timeless assurance: we are really created to enter into the perfect stillness from which we came. And for our return home–by entering into the bare infinity that is the center of our True Self–we arrive where we have always longed to be … without ever having had to set out. Here we make this last, glad discovery: the task of letting go, of separating ourselves from who and what we need no longer be, has already been done for us.

New Discovery Sheds Light On The Origins Of Complex Life

Before complex life evolved, 1.7 billion years ago, only single-celled bacteria and archaea existed. Bacteria and archaea ― microorganisms together known as prokaryotes ― represent two of the three basic branches of all life. The third branch is eukaryotes, organisms with more complex cells that comprise the higher forms of life, up to humans.

The origin of these complex eukaryotic cells is considered by scientists to be one of the major evolutionary leaps in the history of life on Earth, but how the complex cells evolved from the simple-celled microbes has been something of a mystery.

But a recently discovered class of microorganisms, deemed “marvel microbes” for their unique properties, sheds light on the evolutionary transition from simple to complex cells.

In a paper published this week in the journal Nature, an international team of microbiologists presented its discovery of a microbe that is more closely related to complex life than any other simple microorganism.

“Our new paper tells what our microbial ancestors might have looked like,” Dr. Thijs Ettema, a biologist at Uppsala University in Sweden and the study’s lead author, told The Huffington Post. “We humans are eukaryotes, and our cells are big and complex. In contrast, the cells of bacteria and archaea are tiny and simple. The main question is how the big and complex cells of eukaryotes have evolved from the smaller and simpler prokaryotic cells.”

The findings build on previous work from famed American microbiologist Carl Woese, who showed that eukaryotes evolved from archaea. The two types of organisms shared a common ancestry, but how the eukaryotes evolved into complex life from small, simple cells was unknown.

The new study details the discovery of a new group of archaea, the Asgard archaea, which provide insight on how eukaryotes evolved. Asgard archaea microbes fall into one of four known lineages, named after Norse gods. They’re typically found in environments such as the sea floor, river sediments, lakes and hot springs. What’s unusual about Asgard archaea is that while they are prokaryotes, just like bacteria and archaea, they have several eukaryotic genes in their genome, which suggests we may have evolved from these microbes.

“[Asgard archaea] represent a sister group of eukaryotes in the tree of life,” Etterma said. “In addition to that, their genomes contain a lot of important eukaryotic genes. Altogether, the discovery of these Asgard archaea tells us that eukaryotes, and hence humans as well, share a common ancestry.”

These “microbial cousins,” as he puts it, already contained certain genes that later became important in the process of eukaryotic cells to become as complex as humans are today.

The fact that Asgard archaea share several genes with more complex life forms suggests that their cells may feature something similar to the structures that make eukaryotes complex, only more simplified. To be sure, scientists need to conduct further research, putting their cells under a microscope for the first time.

“These organisms are our closest microbial relatives, and we know next to nothing about them,” Ettema said in a statement. “Current methods allow us to take a first genetic sneak peek. It is really exciting!’’

Demagogues Like Trump Pose ‘Profound Threat To Human Rights,’ Watchdog Says

A leading human rights group warns of the worldwide threat posed by the rise of populist leaders like U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Human Rights Watch, in its annual World Report released on Thursday, pointed to “the rise of leaders who, claiming to speak for ‘the people’ amid rising public discontent over the status quo, reject rights as an impediment to their perception of the majority will.”

“The rise of populism poses a profound threat to human rights,” Kenneth Roth, executive director of the group, said in a statement. “Trump and various politicians in Europe seek power through appeals to racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and nativism. They all claim that the public accepts violations of human rights as supposedly necessary to secure jobs, avoid cultural change, or prevent terrorist attacks. In fact, disregard for human rights offers the likeliest route to tyranny.”

Trump features prominently in the report, which summarizes human rights issues in more than 90 countries from late 2015 to November 2016. The president-elect is listed alongside notorious political strongmen, including Syria’s Bashar Assad, Russian President Vladamir Putin and the Philippines’ Rodrigo Duterte.

“Certain politicians are flourishing and even gaining power by portraying rights as protecting only the terrorist suspect or the asylum seeker at the expense of the safety, economic welfare, and cultural preferences of the presumed majority,” Roth said in an essay with the report. “They scapegoat refugees, immigrant communities, and minorities. Truth is a frequent casualty.”

Politicians touting nationalistic agendas have been making waves in recent years in many Western countries. Marine Le Pen, the leader of France’s far-right party, is running for the country’s presidency. Equally conservative parties in Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands have garnered major support.

“They scapegoat refugees, immigrant communities, and minorities. Truth is a frequent casualty.”

Akshaya Kumar, deputy United Nations director at Human Rights Watch, said many of these populist leaders boast about their abuses as a strategy to discredit detractors. “The ‘shameless’ do not seek to hide their abuses or the policies that underpin them, but instead flaunt them as electoral or recruitment tools,” Kumar wrote.

She pointed to a statement last year by the Philippines’ Duterte, who said he “didn’t care about human rights” when questioned about a government policy to shoot drug dealers.

Roth said the past year foreshadowed a “dangerous trend [that] threatens to reverse the accomplishments of the modern human rights movement.” He called for a “vigorous reaffirmation and defense of the basic values underpinning” these rights, and pointed to the need to stamp out so-called fake news.

“Lies do not become truth just because propagated by an army of internet trolls or a legion of partisans,” Roth wrote. “Echo chambers of falsehoods are not inevitable. Facts remain powerful, which is why autocrats go to such lengths to censor those who report inconvenient truths, especially about human rights abuse.”
