11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Study Finds Drop In Prescription Drugs In Medical Marijuana States

States looking for a way to reduce Medicare spending and prescription drug use may want to turn to legalizing medical marijuana, a new study suggests.

The District of Columbia and the 17 states that had medical marijuana as an alternative to prescription drugs in 2013 saved an estimated total of $ 165.2 million in Medicare program and enrollee spending that year, researchers at the University of Georgia reported in the journal Health Affairs this month.

“The results suggest that if all states had implemented medical marijuana the overall savings to Medicare would have been around $ 468 million,” a press release on the findings stated.

The researchers looked at prescriptions filled by Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (or Part D) enrollees from 2010 to 2013. They then narrowed the prescriptions down to ones that could be substituted with medical marijuana. Those prescriptions were for ailments that included anxiety, depression, glaucoma, nausea, pain, psychosis, seizures, sleep disorders and spasticity.

Their results found that there were fewer prescriptions filled for the majority of those categories. The pain category, for instance, saw a decrease in 1,826 daily doses, while the depression category saw a 265 daily dosage decrease.

As the researchers noted in their release, they specifically looked at glaucoma patients’ use of marijuana.

“It turns out that glaucoma is one of the most Googled searches linked to marijuana, right after pain,” Dr. David Bradford of the university’s School of Public & International Affairs, who co-authored the report, stated in the university’s release.

The eye disease can be extremely painful and lead to blindness for some patients. Those sufferers who use marijuana, however, can experience a 25 percent decrease in eye pressure that’s caused by the condition, according to the release.

The relief provided by marijuana only lasts about 60 minutes, however, and expecting patients to take it once an hour is considered “unrealistic,” they concluded. Because of that, they stated that they fully expected prescription drug use to remain strong for the disease even when marijuana was an available alternative.

As the university’s release notes, “they were not disappointed.”

Though there were fewer drug prescriptions written for the other ailments, the daily doses of prescribed glaucoma medications increased, they stated.

That led them to believe that medical marijuana users are not requesting prescriptions just to enjoy a high, but are basing their decision on medical needs.

“The results suggest people are really using marijuana as medicine and not just using it for recreational purposes,” the study’s lead author, Ashley Bradford, who completed her bachelor’s degree in sociology in May, said in a statement.

Speaking in a recent YouTube interview, Bradford expressed hope “that this research will influence and reform policymaking.”

Decreasing Americans’ use of prescription drugs may not just be of monetary benefit, but depending on the type of drug, could help fight Americans’ addiction to prescription painkillers as well.

The U.S. is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2014 alone, opioids ― including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin ― killed more than 28,000 people, more than any year on record. At least half of all those deaths involved a prescription opioid.

“We now know that overdoses from prescription opioid pain relievers are a driving factor in the 15-year increase in opioid overdose deaths,” the CDC states on their website. “Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the U.S. nearly quadrupled, yet there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain that Americans report.”

Three of the most common prescription drugs involved in opioid overdose deaths were methadone, oxycodone and hydrocodone.

Today, 25 states and Washington, D.C., have some form of legalized medical marijuana.

Anti-Trump Republicans Hold ‘Irish Wake’ For GOP Just Before Trump’s RNC Speech

WASHINGTON ― A small group of veteran Republicans who are die-hard Donald Trump opponents gathered Thursday evening to mourn ― and effectively protest ― a party they no longer recognize.

Billed as an Irish wake, the handful of longtime GOP operatives and policy wonks assembled to pay their respects at The Dubliner, a popular Irish bar just a short walk from Capitol Hill.

The event’s organizers took the gag of staging a mock Irish wake seriously. A white wreath at the entry of the area said “RIP, GOP” and a guestbook for would-be mourners sat on a table alongside a piece of paper that said, “GOP IRISH WAKE: A hole is more honorable than a patch.” On one side of the room, a row of framed photos of Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan memorialized Republican presidential icons and their values. And bowls of Jelly Belly jelly beans dotted the tabletops; they were Reagan’s favorite.

The turnout, like more formidable efforts to thwart Trump, was less impressive: About a dozen #NeverTrump Republicans were in attendance. At various points there were just as many or more journalists and onlookers.

The event was conceived by Andrew Weinstein and Chris Scheve, two veterans of Republican campaigns and Hill offices. Weinstein, now head of Ridgeback Communications, was director of media relations for Bob Dole’s 1996 presidential campaign and subsequently a top press aide to then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.).

Scheve, a former environmental policy adviser in the George W. Bush administration, is the founder of AquaTerra Strategies, a government affairs firm.

Weinstein, a D.C. resident who supported Ohio Gov. John Kasich in the GOP primary, envisioned the gathering as a kickoff of the post-Trump recovery that he is sure will take place regardless of whether Trump is elected.

“Whatever happens in this election, there is going to be a process of rebuilding ― either the existing party or thinking of a new party going forward,” Weinstein said. “This group will be part of that process.”

Weinstein plans to vote for presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in November. While he disagrees with her policies, he believes that, unlike Trump, she is qualified to hold the office.

Scheve, on the other hand, voted for Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) in the GOP primary. Scheve is unsure of his plan for November, but may vote for Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson or write in Ronald Reagan as a protest vote.

A common theme among the “mourners” was their disdain for Trump’s racially divisive rhetoric, lack of concrete policy convictions and disrespect for longstanding political norms and civic institutions.

A government affairs professional, who asked not to be named for work-related reasons, said Trump’s proposed ban on Muslim entry into the United States and commitment to deporting all 11 million undocumented immigrants prevented him from backing the Republican nominee.

“His policies bring out the worst in the American people by dividing us and sowing the seeds of suspicion and animus based on people’s religion and ethnicity,” he said.

The quintessentially Washingtonian get-together took place just a night after Cruz rocked the political world by refusing to endorse Trump in his speech at the Republican National Convention. While Cruz’s remarks may have won him few friends at the convention in Cleveland, including in the delegation from his home state of Texas, those at the wake on Thursday had only praise for him.

Cruz’s “speech was perfect,” Scheve said. He denied that it was a snub in any way to Trump. “When I was on the Hill, leadership said all the time to members, ‘Vote your conscience,’” he said. “When did that become a bad thing?”

“I have not heard a ton of Ted Cruz speeches I like and I think he is a generally unlikable person,” Weinstein said. “But last night was remarkable.”

Cameron Kilberg served on the legal team for Arizona Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign and was most recently a policy adviser for the presidential campaign of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Kilberg still respects Christie, but she was “sad to see” he decided to support Trump.

“I’m all for security and immigration reform. Every which way [Trump] has gone about this is not gonna help us,” she said. “Turning our back on NATO is not gonna help us.”

Notwithstanding her presence at the wake, Kilberg is not as despondent about the prospects of the Republican Party.

“It’s all good fun and jest,” Kilberg said of the wake. “But I think the party is not over, and there is a way to reorganize and regroup.”

My Best Friend Is 20 Years Older Than Me, Here’s What I’ve Learned

My best friend is a Filipino with kids as old as me.

It also doesn’t help that she’s female and I’m male.

Now pay attention. I want you to notice what you think about this. I want you to notice what your immediate assumptions are. Do you believe me? Are you not sure? Do you think I must be lying?

Most of the time society assumes the worst.

They think we MUST be in a relationship. We MUST be hiding it from absolutely everybody. But no matter how much dirt my friends or her friends try to dig out, they still come up empty-handed every time.

That’s because there’s nothing happening.

You know what we do? We do things that normal friends would. We sit and talk. We laugh about work. We confide and trust one another. We go out. The chemistry that everyone else sees is so easily mistaken for love, but that’s just because we know each other so well.

I can’t tell you how this happened. The stars aligned and for some reason we had the perfect amount of compatibility. But if you think about it you’ll see why we’re compatible. I’m 23 and I’m very much open to everything. I want to learn from the experience of everyone.

What better way to learn about life than to talk to someone twice my age from another country? And guess what? I’ve learned more than you can ever imagine. It’s the lessons that I’ve learned from this wonderful person that have shaped my decisions for the past year.

She told me one thing, and that was to stay single and enjoy life while I can. She got married when she was 21 and wished she could’ve done things over. I’m currently out in San Francisco, writing in my blog and travelling the United States. I owe it all to her.

The bigger point is that society is too often focused on the wrong things–like age, gender, race, and background. It’s for this reason that our growth as human beings becomes stunted. We only hang out with those our age who want to party and fall in love on a whim. Why not become friends with someone older? Why not learn about the implications of a divorce and marrying early and having children?

There’s a whole wealth of experience that we’re missing out on. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Many of my friends rushed to get married before they got to travel outside of their own state. I know from my experience with my best friend that this might not always be the best plan of action.

I learned so much from her.

I learned that being 40 doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun like you’re 21. I learned that being a single parent demands a departure from how you acted before a divorce. I learned patience. I learned that there’s a point where friends become family. I learned that Filipino people have the best hospitality.

My decision to commit social suicide by being seen with a woman twice my age in public paid dividends for me that I’ll continue to reap for years to come.

Friendships can be weird, but I’m convinced that it’s the most beautiful thing human beings are capable of creating. Don’t limit yourself because of what people may think. I say, go for it.

Stay Cool This Summer Without an AC

With temperatures reaching into the high 90s and triple digits across the country this week, I want to discuss how you can cool down safely in a heat wave without an air conditioner. Although cooling centers and air conditioners are great options for everyone, sometimes things might not work out as planned and your AC might break down, the store or cooling center might be closed, or there’s a regional blackout. When this kind of situation arises, remember to stay hydrated and give these cooling tips a try.

Watch: Dr. Oz’s Summertime Sleep Solution

Cook Outdoors or Make No-Cook Recipes

The warmest room in a residence tends to be the kitchen, where heat is generated to cook food. Keep the temperature inside your apartment or house cool by tossing no-cook salads, snacking on no-bake energy bars, or cooking outdoors on your porch or backyard. If you prefer to grill outside, follow this quick and easy grilling guide.

Watch: Gluten-Free Recipes: No Cooking Required!

Set Up Your Fan Strategically

Because hot air rises from the ground up, a ceiling fan isn’t your best choice when it comes to indoor room fans. The best place to set up a fan is to use a rotating fan on the floor. Position your fan with its blades across from an open window to create a cross-breeze. Use another fan by the window to vent hot air out as well. For more of a cooling effect, place a bowl of ice next to your floor fan so the fan will blow the rising cool air from the melting ice cubes into the room and bounce off the opposite wall. This will keep cool air circulating inside.

Try Spray Bottles or Wet Cloths and Sheets

Fill a spray bottle with cold water and spritz anytime you need a chill. Dampen a linen or cotton sheet and hang it by an open window to catch any breeze that comes through. You can also keep a wide bucket of water by the foot of a window and hang the sheet so the bottom portion touches the water. As the water evaporates and travels up the sheet, any breeze that passes through will feel cool. To cool down your skin, wet a cloth with cold or chilled water to use as a cold compress in a pinch.

Watch: Your Most Embarrassing Summer Questions

Turn Off Electronics

Powering down any non-essential electronics is just one small but significant way to keep additional hot air from circulating. Shut down anything not being used or that doesn’t need to be turned on like power strips, electric equipment like computers and televisions, and electric lights.

Use Awnings, Window Blinds, Curtains, or Shades

If you’re not near tree shade, use awnings for an artificial covering. When you’re indoors, keep blinds, curtains or shades drawn to reduce the amount of solar heat that enters through open windows. Look for thermal curtains or shades and give your windows a checkup to see if they’re energy-efficient. You can keep windows open for air circulation but try to leave half the window covered so you don’t get the maximum sun exposure you would get otherwise. If nighttime hours are cooler, open windows and doors to let the cool air inside.

How To Sleep When Horrific News Becomes The Norm

Last night more than 260 civilians were killed in violent clashes with military forces in Istanbul.

The night before, at least 84 people lost their lives when a truck deliberately zigzagged through crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France.

Two weeks ago Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were shot and killed by police and five police officers were gunned down by a sniper. The previous month, 49 people were killed by a shooter at an iconic gay nightclub in Orlando.

And scores of other shootingsbombings and tragedies have happened in the days and hours in between.

We heard the stories. We saw the pictures. We watched terror happen on video.

Mothersfatherssonsdaughtersloverscolleaguesfriends and the man from down the street who “would have gave you the shirt off his back” lost their lives.

For victims’ loved ones, the grief is immeasurable. For African-Americans, the pain of watching police brutality against black people comes with a toll of its own. For people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, the hurt of an attack against their own community is agonizing.

People intimately affected by these tragedies experience emotions that others of us cannot fathom.

But even for those without a personal connection to these terrible events, sadness and pain are still a reality.

We feel pain even if we’re not involved

If you see, hear or even read about something traumatic ― even if you’re not directly involved ― you can still have an emotional response, Robert Hawkins, an associate professor at the Silver School of Social Work at New York University, told The Huffington Post.

“This is trauma that doesn’t necessarily happen to you or you didn’t necessarily experience, but you become affected by it,” he said.

It can be worse if you identify with those affected, explained David Kaplan, chief professional officer at the American Counseling Association.

“If you relate to the person who was attacked in any way, you’re going to grieve because it’s also part of you,” Kaplan told HuffPost previously.

But that grief, while normal and expected, can lead to stress and sleeplessness.

“With the frequency of shootings and terror attacks there is a sense of anxiety that’s building in people,” Anita Gadhia-Smith, a psychologist in Washington, D.C., told The New York Times ― “a sense of vulnerability and powerlessness.”

Traumatic life events are among the biggest causes of anxiety and depression, research suggests. But experts say taking steps to care for yourself ― including taking care of your sleep ― is what helps you cope best with that stress.

Stress causes chemical changes in our bodies

Not sleeping is the body’s natural response after hearing about and watching disturbing events, according to sleep psychologist Jason Ong of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

When the body releases stress hormones, the emotion-processing areas of the brain stay on, suppressing some of its sleep-promoting systems, he said. Even though your body knows you’re tired, your brain knows something is wrong and you need to deal with it.

The bottom line: research shows that when we’re stressed, the chemical and biological changes in our bodies can interfere with our sleep.

That stress and sleeplessness is important to address early, experts say, before it leads to long-term cycles of mental health problems and chronic insomnias (which can grow from cycles of short-term insomnias).

“Anxiety and insomnia can feed each other and become a cycle,” the National Sleep Foundation says.

Here are seven self-care tips that can help you deal with worries and sleep better:

1. Talk about what’s bothering you

A big part of dealing with a tragedy is expressing your emotions, said Steve Orma, a clinical psychologist and author of Stop Worrying and Go to Sleep: How to Put Insomnia to Bed for Good. “If you’re sad, allow yourself to cry. If you’re anxious and afraid, say ‘I’m anxious and afraid,’” he previously told HuffPost.

If you’re sad, allow yourself to cry. If you’re anxious and afraid, say ‘I’m anxious and afraid.’
Steve Orma, clinical psychologist

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration recommends that you talk to family and friends about how you’re feeling.

2. Do things that help you relax

Relaxation and meditation techniques help ease stress and can be especially helpful before bed, said Phyllis Zee, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

3. Don’t change your sleep routines

Losing sleep at night might make that snooze button more tempting. But picking up poor sleep habits just makes it harder for you to fall asleep at night, Orma said.

If you’re not a regular nap-taker, don’t start. Avoid sleeping in later than usual. And don’t suddenly start taking sleep medications because you may grow dependent on them, he said.

4. Turn off the news at night

Leave a news-free buffer of at least 30 to 45 minutes before you try to sleep to allow yourself to relax, Ong said. Limiting your exposure to media coverage of violence will help you relax and sleep better.

5. Practice good sleep hygiene

It might sound obvious, but it’s worth noting that the times that you’re more likely to have trouble sleeping are when it’s most important to do the things that are good for sleep, Zee said. Exercise during the day, but not too close to bedtime. Get some sun during the day, but avoid bright lighter later at night (which can make it harder for you to fall asleep and actually make you sleep worse).

6. Give yourself a break

You need to tell yourself it’s ok to have a few nights of poor sleep, Orma said. The more you beat yourself up for not sleeping well and the more upset you get about it, the more anxious you can become about not sleeping and fuel the sleepless cycle.

Talk to yourself like you were talking to your best friend or a child… in a very nurturing, supportive or positive way.
Steve Orma, clinical psychologist

“Talk to yourself like you were talking to your best friend or a child. You would talk in a very nurturing, supportive or positive way,” Orma told HuffPost previously. “You wouldn’t freak them out.”

7. Get the help you need

If coping on your own or with your family members is not enough, talk to a psychologist or licensed medical health professional, recommends the American Psychological Association.

While there is no one timeline that fits everyone for how long it should take for a trauma to subside, the APA says you might benefit from seeking professional help if you feel overwhelmed by sadness or helplessness, if the problem doesn’t seem to be getting better after talking with family and friends or if you find it difficult to maintain your everyday routine.

Teeth: A Very Short Introduction

Teeth: A Very Short Introduction

Teeth are amazing – the product of half a billion years of evolution. They provide fuel for the body by breaking apart other living things; and they must do it again and again over a lifetime without themselves being broken in the process. This means that plants and animals have developed
tough or hard tissues for protection, and teeth have evolved ways to sharpen or strengthen themselves to overcome those defences. And just as different jobs require different tools, animals with different diets have different shaped teeth to deal with the variety of foods that they eat.

In this Very Short Introduction, Peter S. Ungar, an award-winning author and leading scientist, presents the story of teeth. Ungar outlines the key concepts, including insights into the origin of teeth and their evolution. Considering why teeth are important, he describes how they are made, and how
they work, including their fundamental importance in the fossil record. Ungar finishes with a review of mammal teeth, looking at how they evolved and how recent changes to our diet are now affecting dental health.

ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and
enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

5 Self-Care Practices Black People Can Use While Coping With Trauma

Trauma in the black community is a constant reality we have to face.

We especially feel it when an unarmed black man is killed by a cop, a black woman dies in police custody or an officer walks free of charges after killing a black child in the park. In America, our skin color is a daily reminder that we, and our loved ones, may not make it to tomorrow.

One of the most recent reminders of this seemingly unescapable fate is Alton Sterling, who was shot several times in the chest and back by Baton Rouge police Tuesday outside of a convenience store where he frequently sold CDs. Before the black community could even fully process Sterling’s death, Philando Castile was gunned down Wednesday after he was pulled over for a busted tail light. Accompanying both tragedies were gruesome videos and images of cops taking their lives ― including Sterling’s bloody corpse plastered on Wednesday’s New York Daily News’ front page cover

Sterling and Castile’s killings weren’t isolated incidents. Black bodies have been at risk long before smart phones were readily available for people to document police brutality. We now live in a country where we’re inundated with horrific news and images that remind us why we have to declare to the world that #BlackLivesMatter.

These graphic images of slain black lives can be triggering if we neglect our mental and emotional limits. This is why black people must take the extra steps to preserve their health, especially in a digital space.

The unfortunate reality is that Sterling and Castile weren’t the first and they won’t be the last to lose their lives to police shootings. But while we fight for them and stand against the despicable cycle of black death at the hands of cops leading to non-indictment, we must take care of ourselves.

Here are five ways you can practice good mental and emotional habits online while coping with race-related trauma.

1. Turn video autoplay off on your social media pages.

You DO NOT have to watch the videos of these killings to stay informed. The autoplay setting on many platforms like Facebook and Twitter make this unavoidable, especially when the videos are shared over and over again on your timeline. Luckily, you can control whether or not you want these videos to automatically play. Tatiana King Jones shared screenshots of the process on Twitter to make the steps easy to follow.

Simply adjust your settings on Facebook, both online and on the app, by selecting “settings,” click “videos” and switch video autoplay to “off.” After going into your settings, press “data” then “video autoplay” and “Never play videos automatically” will be the last option. On Instagram, just tap the settings icon in the top-right corner of your profile and switch the autoplay option to off.

2. Follow accounts that inform and nurture you without force feeding you torturous details.

The quickest way to send yourself into an anxious frenzy is looking at a string of triggering posts on your timeline. Make an effort to weed out the accounts who capitalize on black death by posting purposefully “baity” content for the sake of a share or like. Make a list of some of your favorite accounts that inform you in a realistic, productive and ethical manner. A few examples of these accounts are Julia CravenWesley Lowery, Jamil Smith, Yamiche Alcindor, Xavier Burgin, Broderick Greer and Amandla Stenberg. Part of having a healthy social media life in times of crisis should also include nourishing your soul. Balance out the hard facts with social accounts that give meditative and reflective advice. Some accounts to get you started are Alex Elle, Tracy Clayton and Shelah Marie. The poem below from Elle about self-love in times of pain is all too relevant here. Also indulge in a few hashtags that will put a smile on your face like #CarefreeBlackKids2K16 created by Heben Nigatu.

love yourself entirely. even when it's hard.

A photo posted by alexandra (@alex_elle) on

3. Ignore the trolls.

Trolls deserve zero attention. This rings especially true when they use black pain and death to taunt people who speak out against racism. Instead of stressing yourself over irrelevant trolls, realize that they went out of their way to search for your post ― most likely behind a fake account ― and expose their bigotry. It’s usually a fruitless endeavor to explain how racism works to a Twitter account with an egg as an avatar so do yourself a favor and use that block button.

4. Log off.

You shouldn’t feel guilty for unplugging for a few hours ― or days. Sometimes that is the best thing you can do for yourself in the midst of trauma. When you’re inundated with news updates, often times of a disturbing nature, staying informed can seem too heavy duty so You have to balance the bad with the good. Take a walk, write in a journal, watch a movie or do anything productive that makes you happy. You can get lost in the digital madness if you don’t walk away every now and then. Don’t worry, everything will still be there when you get back.

5. Remember offline conversations are just as important as online conversations.

Confide in friends and family about how you’re felling. Vent. Write it down. Talk to yourself. However you communicate your feelings, remember that it doesn’t have to always be online. It’s vital to have people in your life whose shoulder you can cry on and can help you process traumatic events. It’s equally as important to have people who can uplift you and help reaffirm why your livelihood matters. A good support system is key.

These are just a few tips that may help you remain hopeful. Maintaining your overall health is the only way you can continue to fight the good fight and help make a difference. And always remember, in the words of Kendrick Lamar, “we gon’ be alright.”

Activists Shower Senators With Dollars In GMO Vote

WASHINGTON ― The Senate advanced a bill Wednesday that would set national labeling standards for genetically modified food ingredients, angering activists who showered the lawmakers with dollar bills during the vote.

The bill would override state labeling laws such as Vermont’s, which requires companies to specify whether their products use genetically engineered ingredients. That law went into effect July 1.

Supporters of the Senate measure, which already passed the House, say the bill is needed so that consumers can have some consistency in labels and so that manufacturers don’t have to navigate a patchwork of differing local laws, which they say would be expensive.

And they argue ― as more than 100 nobel laureates recently did ― that there is no evidence that GMOs are dangerous and significant evidence that they help alleviate malnutrition, disease and hunger.

But critics say the bill actually hides whether or not many foods contain GMOs, and they allege that it was written by Sens. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) at the behest of giant agricultural firms, such as Monsanto.

Indeed, several activists interrupted the vote and threw wads of dollars bills into the Senate chamber in Stabenow’s direction, shouting that it was “Monsanto money.” One of those arrested identified herself as Alexis Baden-Mayer, the political director of the Organic Consumers Association.

“This is not how democracy works!” one of the protesters shouted after throwing the money, while a police officer tried to clamp a hand over her mouth.

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), who led opposition to the measure, said it was dubbed the “dark act” because it obfuscates genetically engineered ingredients and makes it harder for consumers to learn about them.

Because the bill defines GMO products only as ones that contain genetically engineered elements, it leaves out products that have the engineered genes removed in the manufacturing process, such as sugar, high fructose corn syrup and soybean oil.

Also, specifically labeling GMO ingredients would be voluntary under the bill. Instead of a clear label, companies would only have to include a “quick response” computer code on GMO products that people could scan with a smartphone. The square, pixelated symbol would direct them to a website to find out if that product contained GMOs.

The third problem that opponents cite is that there are no enforcement mechanisms in the bill should firms neglect to even include GMO information online.

“What customers want in the United States of America, nine out of 10, is they want their food labeled,” Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), who runs a family farm, said at a news conference before the vote. “So, what did the Senate do? We developed a Mickey Mouse QR label.”

He and other senators, including Vermont Sens. Bernie Sanders (I) and Pat Leahy (D), complained that not only did the bill obscure information about GMOs, but it was advancing without any hearings to let people examine the issues involved.

They argued that at least the topic should be debated more vigorously because at base consumers have a right to know what’s in their food. Even if they are not concerned for safety, they ought to have the information to vote with their pocket books on what sorts of products and farming techniques they want to support.

“We’re going to deny consumers, with this bill, the right to know what they’re buying,” Tester said.

Senators can try to amend the measure, but it was unclear if leaders would allow those votes. Sixty-five of them voted to proceed with the bill, including Stabenow and 17 other Democrats. Five Republicans opposed it.
