The Fungible World of Donald Trump

Fungible. Hate is fungible. It indicates that something is able to replace or be replaced by another identical item; mutually interchangeable. I thought of it yesterday as I watched Trump’s allegedly presidential style speech. I say watched because I turned down the sound for awhile and just studied the contortions of the face – filled to the brim with hatred – it was there whenever he mentioned Hillary or Syrian refugees or whoever crossed his very fine line to become a part of his vast hate machine. If necessary it would include the LGBT community – but for the moment they are safe from his hate machine – the national outrage over Orlando would not make it popular for him. One thing I know about hate – it is fungible. Those who hate a religion or a race of anyone’s sexuality can replace one hate for the other. Once the machinery of hate is set into motion it is hard to keep it safely walled in even if Mexico is forced to build the wall.

The flaw in the Rodgers & Hammerstein song, “You’ve got to be carefully taught…” is that in most cases one must be carefully “untaught” – we are such tribal creatures that we find it difficult to accept the other until we learn through living that the other is us. Right now there is a group of Trump villagers – ready to join him in hating – but if the gods betray the USA and he, Trump, were elected, the Trumpeteers would discover that he is no friend to them having destroyed the economy and their livelihoods – and they would have to come after the monster they created with fiery torches – and face the palace guard whose machine guns are ready to mow down the very people who voted him into office.

The Trump campaign, fired up by insult, “crook, liar, dumb, greedy,” is far more self-reflecting than he would allow. Every time he hurls some scornfully abusive remark at an adversary in the hope that it will stick it is impossible to imagine that this is not a part of his self-loathing, projected on to his adversaries. And he has so much to hate. I look with wonder at his stony faced family and wonder how they can live so close to this dangerous man without fearing for themselves. No, I do not hate them. Nor do I pity them but I do feel a bit sorry for anyone who is a prop in the life of a would be tyrant – as I always pitied poor Blondie – Hitler’s Alsatian dog. Does Trump Tower really have a bunker?

ADVICE 26: Surviving a Long-Distance Relationship

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I’m in a relationship that is long-distance for the summer. I feel like you lose some emotional value when you communicate through text, but my boyfriend prefers to write out what he feels as opposed to talking about it. How should we communicate?

He’s a wonderful man, and we love each other and make each other happy. But it frustrates me that he’s nonchalant about how we spend our time together. If I suggest something, I never get a solid, “Yes, this is what I want.” It’s usually, “Sure,” or “I don’t care, whatever you want to do,” or “I don’t know, you decide.”

I’ve expressed that I dislike making the decisions, and that it feels like he does stuff with me regardless of whether he really wants to or not. His response was that while he doesn’t mind the activities we’ve done, they ultimately don’t matter; he simply wants to spend time with me.

Now we are back on break, and I’m the one to suggest when to Skype or talk. Should I address this with him, or am I overreacting?
–Marie; Scarsdale, NY

I’m going to answer your first question second, and your second question first.

No, I don’t think you’re overreacting. As my mother-the-therapist says, there’s no such thing as a wrong feeling. You are frustrated by something your boyfriend does — or doesn’t do — and that needs to be addressed. If it’s not, it’s going to end up lurking beneath the surface, breeding resentment and discontent.

Every relationship has its own equilibrium, and yours appears to be out of whack. You’re the one putting in all the effort, and I’m guessing it feels that if you didn’t, the only thing that would keep you a couple would be your Facebook status.

In a way, your boyfriend reminds me of me. Shortly after my now-wife, Emily, and I started dating, she asked me what I wanted — to eat, or watch on TV, or do on Saturday night, I don’t remember — and I replied with the dreaded, “Whatever you want,” like I was part of an arranged marriage in Zamunda.

Truthfully, I (idiotically) thought this was the ultimate expression of chivalry. I’m here, at your service, sacrificing my own needs to satisfy yours.

Emily did not see it this way. She couldn’t stand that answer, and she wasn’t shy about telling me so. It made her feel the same way it makes you feel — that I wasn’t invested in the relationship, and I was making her bear the full burden of it.

Of course, nothing could’ve been further from the truth. My indifference had nothing to do with Emily. As long as our weekend plans aren’t filled with my kryptonite — like, say, seafood meals and opera tickets — I generally do not care what we do or where we go, partly because I’m super low maintenance, partly because I don’t like the pressure of making the choice. It stresses me out. I take it too personally. I spend the whole time worried that the other person isn’t having a good enough time, as if their enjoyment is my responsibility. Which, when it’s your call, I guess it kind of is.

But hearing Emily’s frustration, I knew I had to change. It didn’t matter if I had to fake it, and it didn’t matter how uncomfortable it made me. I had to figure out a way to start making decisions. So I did.

Your boyfriend can do the same. But since he hasn’t yet changed, you’re well within your rights to bring it up again. Tell him exactly what bothers you, and exactly what you need. Leave no doubt.

I’d also suggest opening up to the idea of changing yourself. At least a little bit. When you’ve mentioned this topic in the past, think about what he said — that all he wants to do is spend time with you. That’s a pretty big deal. It’s a foundational pillar of any successful relationship, and I wouldn’t take that for granted.

So while he needs to adjust his behavior, it might be worth adjusting your expectations. There’s a happy medium somewhere in the middle.

As for how you should communicate when you’re apart, this is yet another dynamic in which your boyfriend and I are alike. While I agree that emotions can get lost in texts/emails, I am not a fan of the phone. I can’t stand small talk, and when it comes to more important discussions, I like having time to think about what I want to say.

Traditional Skype conversations are even more awkward, because it’s just a phone call where the other person can see that you’re sitting in your underwear.

I’m much more comfortable being face to face, enjoying a shared experience, when every pause isn’t filled with stress. Which is why a few years ago when Emily and I spent four months doing long-distance, we’d coordinate Skype dates that coincided with the airings of our favorite shows. We each sat on our respective couches, and she’d watch on her TV while I’d watch on mine.

It was the perfect solution for us, and it could be the perfect solution for the two of you — an activity you can do together that’s already been suggested and scheduled.

Medicare Survey Could Be Contributing To Opioid Epidemic

2016-06-23-1466723097-8462432-HealthcareCostsPhotobyuserImagesMoneyonCreativeCommons.jpg
Photo by Creative Commons user Images Money. “Healthcare Costs.”

The nation’s addiction to opioid drugs claimed greater than 28,000 lives in 2014-nearly four times more than they did in 1999–and more than half involved prescription drugs. The tragic growth in opioid-related deaths is not an aberration; it’s part of a 15-year-long trend the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says is now a “national epidemic.”

Researchers have identified numerous contributing factors related to the opioid crisis, including the changing dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship, the creation of more potent and long-acting drugs, and trends started by influential medical experts and academic societies in the late 1990s suggesting total pain control should be treated as an attainable medical ideal–the so-called “fifth vital sign.”

While these concerns are all worthy of significant attention, a seemingly harmless government survey of patient satisfaction may be one of the most overlooked and important causes behind the current opioid epidemic. The survey, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), is administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It was created in 1995 as part of the federal government’s efforts to provide consumers with objective metrics for evaluating health care service providers and to create a way to hold providers accountable for the quality of their diagnoses, treatments, communication, and the comfort provided to patients.

In 2005, the Deficit Reduction Act was passed, requiring HCAHPS scores to be used as a standardized evaluation of health care providers and systems when issuing Medicare reimbursements. Provisions contained within the Affordable Care Act in 2010 further tied reimbursement rates to HCAHPS survey results.

Proponents of these measures state that providing greater transparency for consumers and incentivizing hospitals and other providers to compete with one another simultaneously lowers costs and improves quality and patient satisfaction. But one important and detrimental unintended consequence of HCAHPS and other similar mandates is they encourage physicians and other health care professionals to place a higher value on certain measures of satisfaction–notably pain management–that may put patients at risk.

In addition to assessing the quality of communication from the health care team and the environment of a patient’s room, the HCAHPS survey asks respondents to score a provider’s success at managing pain. There are several questions completely dedicated to pain, including, “How often was your pain well controlled?” and “How often did the hospital staff do everything they could to help you with your pain?”

Controlling a patient’s pain is undoubtedly a crucial part of practicing medicine, but survey questions such as this one have encouraged providers to treat patients with ever-higher dosages of opioids, the consequences of which have proven to be extremely dangerous. Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the United States has nearly quadrupled, and opioid-related deaths have risen at a similar rate over the same period. Amongst those addicted to heroin, greater than 70 percent report abusing prescription opioids prior to using heroin.

The phrase “do no harm” may be more complicated than it appears on the surface. Doctors are faced with the challenge of curing patients and treating their pain, but they must also avoid unsafe prescribing practices that could lead to drug tolerance, addiction, or both. The HCAHPS survey inadvertently adds to this dilemma by making patients’ pain management effectively more important than their long-term health.

Providers should always work to find new and effective ways to treat pain, especially now that over one-third of Americans suffer from chronic or acute pain. It is up to the health care community to become responsible stewards for this widespread problem. Providers should emphasize non-opioid classes of pain medications and other holistic strategies for pain management, as well as push for more drug-monitoring programs.

Unfortunately, achieving these goals is made much more difficult as a result of the external pressures placed on providers by government-mandated hospital score ratings such as those produced by HCAHPS, especially when they are used to determine monetary reimbursements.

Business Leaders Need Not Apply

Over and over again, Americans laud “business practice” and call for businessmen and businesswomen to fix our government and public institutions. A local government’s elected board congratulates itself when they hire an administrator with business experience, not local government experience. They assume that “real-world business practice” will solve the locality’s problems. People running for political office tell us that their business experience qualifies them to be the best elected officials. Public institutions–museums and other not-for-profits–hire corporate executives to “straighten out” the institution.

But “business practices,” it turns out, are volatile. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, almost half of business establishments fail within five years. There were more than 29,000 corporate bankruptcy filings in 2015. The American Productivity & Quality Center study demonstrates that nearly half of all new product launches are unsuccessful and that only 45% of those new products are launched on time. That’s what counts for success in the business world.

We don’t tolerate that rate of failure in government. A failure of national defenses is catastrophic. We don’t tolerate a 50% safety rating for our drinking water (witness Flint, Michigan). Nor is that rate acceptable for roads, public safety (police, fire, and rescue), and the other infrastructure we rely on. When the electricity goes out, we demand accountability. We don’t gamble with preservation of our national treasures. And when government fails to pay its creditors, the ensuing economic crisis impacts every citizen. We are outraged if government and public institutions exhibit the 50% success rate of the “for-profit” business world. We expect our public institutions to perform consistently and conservatively.

Most Americans believe that government and public institutions need reform. They need to improve efficiency and accountability. I agree. We cannot do that, however, by simply calling in a few businesspeople. Government and public institutions are not businesses. Government and public institutions are mission-driven–not profit-driven.

Our military forces undertake the sacred mission to “protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Every single member of the force swears allegiance to that mission. The mission of the local water utility is to provide the public with an adequate, clean water supply. The mission of the local government finance director is to insure that government funds are expended appropriately and with adequate oversight controls. The mission of the local museum is to preserve, display, and tell the story of the collections entrusted to its care. Each government and public institution has a public trust that they must maintain above all other considerations. They cannot cut their losses. They cannot shut down the product line. They cannot declare bankruptcy. They cannot fail.

Our school systems are a prime example. The effort to improve education through business metrics and acumen is not a “best practice” success story. A 2006 Harvard Business Review article summed up the challenge: “Business leaders . . . have been extremely generous with money and counsel for urban districts, only to be frustrated by the results. As some corporate executives are beginning to realize, urban school systems are vastly more complex than businesses. . . .” Still we persist. The charter school movement to privatize public education does not improve student education or outcomes. For-profit universities have exceptionally poor student graduation levels and leave young adults with staggering amounts of debt. And high-stakes testing analytics punish educators instead of helping teachers respond to the instructional needs of their students. We’ve lost the mission of public education–to create educated, informed citizens for our republic–in a haze of misapplied business clichés.

So let’s all stop with the trite platitudes. Just because an individual makes a profit in the entrepreneurial world does not mean that he or she can focus the mission of a government or public institution. It does not qualify them to lead the community, the state, or the nation and accomplish an essential mission. The profit/loss equation may increase the return for a corporation’s shareholders, but it will not necessarily accomplish the mission of a government or public institution. Business metrics may say a lot about the delivery of a product or service, but they do not describe the value of a mission.

The broad realization that business leaders do not hold all the answers had better come soon, because reliance on business leaders in government and public institutions is not arresting the alarming deterioration of our public infrastructure and institutions.

On the silver anniversary of ADVICE, allow me to say thank you to everyone for reading and to those who have shared their personal lives in this public forum.

After all, this column wouldn’t exist without your questions, so please keep them coming.

To submit a question, fill out this impossibly brief Google form, then come back and read today’s answer…

(Questions have been modified for space and clarity.)

I went on a date with a guy and had a really good time. At the end of the night, he told me he was married. He said he felt bad and wanted to be honest with me. Yes, I was very upset, as I seem to attract married men. We still talk to each other on the phone and we do see each other two to three times a week at our sons’ baseball practices. I have told him several times that we cannot continue talking to each other, and he tells me his relationship with his wife is OK. He continues to contact me and tells me he wants me, but I don’t know if he really likes me. I know he can’t just break it off with his wife overnight — nor would he — but can he really feel something for me?

In one of the first editions of this column, I explained how, in my answers, I wouldn’t be telling people what they should or shouldn’t be doing. Doing so would imply that I know best, and that’s not the case. I’m neither judge nor jury.

Instead, my goal is to paint a 360-degree picture of a situation, to present all viable options and resolutions — and then let the questioner decide on the proper course of action.

Unfortunately, with this question, I’m having trouble adhering to my mission statement.

This situation is bad all the way around. He’s married. Your sons play baseball together. I’m not sure there are two sides to this story.

I don’t mean to sound harsh or insensitive, but I don’t see how this is a relationship you can pursue. I get that it’s difficult to be lonely, and I get that when you find someone you like, you’re willing to do just about anything — and put up with just about anything — to hold onto that connection.

But do you really want to have an affair with the father of your son’s teammate? Before you wade too far into this, think about the potential consequences. Think about if this is what you want for your love story. Think about your son and the humiliation he stands to suffer if things go south. (And in all likelihood, it will go south.) Think about this guy’s wife and what it’d feel like to have someone cheat on you. Do you really want to be the other woman?

Not that it makes a difference, but this guy isn’t even saying he’s looking to leave his wife for you. In fact, he’s telling you the exact opposite. He’s telling you that his marriage is fine and that he’s not going anywhere.

Best-case scenario, he’s someone who should never have gotten married and is searching for his next side piece. Worst-case scenario, he’s a scumbag who takes advantage of unsuspecting women to get off, preying on their vulnerabilities in the bleachers during batting practice. Where’s the upside? Where’s the fairy-tale ending? Where’s the ending that results in anything but disaster?

Could he be feeling something for you? Sure. I guess. But I think the more appropriate question is: What does it matter?

Instead of focusing on him, let’s focus on you. You said you always attract married men — the very definition of the unavailable dream. Why do you think that is? Granted, given your son’s age and extracurricular activities, these are the guys you most frequently come across, so it could be a product of circumstance.

But if I had to bet, I’d say there’s more to it than that. I don’t believe you’re consciously pursuing other people’s husbands, but I do believe they keep showing up on your doorstep for a reason.

While I accept that there’s much in life we can’t control, I do think that the worlds we create for ourselves aren’t created by accident. They are often a reflection of our inner thoughts and beliefs. To a certain extent, our lives play out as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

So I’m wondering what’s making you invest in this toxic relationship. What purpose or void is it filling? Do you not believe you’re worthy of something better? Do you not believe you’re worthy of happiness? Deep down, is there something that’s convinced you that this is the best that you deserve?

I don’t know, and I’m not going to guess. In realigning with my mission statement for this column, I’ll let you be the one to decide.

Fitbit Says You’re Using Your Alarm Clock All Wrong

Trouble shutting down at night and hitting the pillow? There’s a Fitbit app for that.

Fitbit, the maker of fitness-tracking devices, has rolled out new features for its app aimed at improving sleep. Among the updates are alerts to remind you to go to sleep, and a vibrating wakeup alarm that gently rouses you out of sleep without disturbing your partner.

“Establishing a consistent sleep schedule is one of the simplest and most powerful things you can do to improve sleep,” Fitbit’s Melanie Chase, director of product marketing, told The Huffington Post.

And that’s the goal of the new Sleep Schedule app, Chase said — “to help guide you to get a more consistent pattern of sleep.”

The new tools make personalized sleep recommendations. The app uses your previous sleep history to set setting optimal bedtimes and wakeup times. Users can get bedtime push notification reminders on their smartphones, and set silent alarms on their Fitbit devices based on personalized recommendations.

Don’t worry: You can override the recommendations to set alarms that match your schedule.

Users can track sleep progress using the app’s history charts.

The updated app is compatible with all Fitbit devices that track sleep (and through manual sleep tracking with Fitbit One).

What about REM?

Noticeably absent from Fitbit’s sleep-tracking offerings is the capability to monitor how deeply you sleep. Other sleep trackers (such as the Jawbone UP or the Aura Sleep Sensor) let users know how much time they spend in deep, light and REM sleep — and therefore how well rested you should (theoretically) feel.

Fitbit said the focus of its app update is to help users improve sleep consistency for better sleep quality.

“Getting enough sleep and regularly going to bed around the same time each night can be a challenge,” Chase said. The app’s new tools look at your data, analyze it for patterns and create a personalized sleep schedule for you.

“This [app] is for people looking to make the most of their sleep and attempt to optimize the sleep that they are getting in order to maximize their daytime productivity,” Michael Grandner, director of the University of Arizona’s sleep and health research program (and is a Fitbit sleep adviser), told HuffPost.

Can an app make you sleep better?

Science agrees that going to bed and waking up at the same time every day is one of the best things you can do for your sleep. The consistency helps set your body’s internal clock, so you expect to sleep at the same time every night and you actually sleep better because your body is ready for that sleep, according to experts.

But you need to actually clock all the sleep you need to get the benefits, sleep expert and adviser Els van der Helm, told HuffPost.

Sleep trackers can overestimate the amount of time that was spent asleep, which could be dangerous if users are building up more sleep debt than they think, van der Helm said.

Rely on your own best judgment of both your sleep and how you feel during the day — subjectively.
Els van der Helm, sleep expert and adviser

One study found that Fitbits misidentified sleep and wake times, compared with higher quality tests used by sleep doctors (like polysomnography and standard actigraphy).

Use common sense when it comes to sleep tracker results, van der Helm said. “Rely on your own best judgment of both your sleep and how you feel during the day — subjectively.”

Trump’s Big Los Angeles Fundraiser Last Month? Maybe Not So Big.

Four weeks after Donald Trump’s campaign made a big splash with its first fundraiser in Los Angeles, new Federal Election Commission filings suggest the event wasn’t quite so splashy, after all.

At the time, the campaign bragged that it pulled in $ 6 million from some 100 donors, with pledges for an additional $ 4 million, through a recently drafted fundraising agreement with the Republican National Committee.

But the RNC’s report filed Monday evening shows that Trump’s “Victory Committee” transferred to the party a total of $ 3.1 million raised in the days surrounding the reception and dinner at the LA home of investor Tom Barrack.

“That’s astounding,” said Florida GOP consultant Rick Wilson, a longtime Trump critic who predicted that the weak showing would make donors distrust Trump even more. “It’s even worse than everyone’s been expecting.”

Neither the Trump campaign nor the RNC responded to The Huffington Post’s queries about the fundraising figures.

The Trump campaign appeared to take no transfers from the joint committee in May, according to the filing. (It’s not required to — the money can remain in the joint committee’s account, and that committee does not have to file its FEC report until later this summer.) And donors whose names appear in the RNC report as having given to Trump Victory do not appear in Trump’s filing.

But because donors to the joint committee can give the various RNC accounts more than $ 330,000 per person, compared with a $ 5,400 maximum for the candidate, the RNC’s total should include most of what was raised at the event.

Stuart Stevens, a veteran of Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign, said he wasn’t that surprised about the exaggerated numbers.

“They lie about everything. They even lie about crowd size,” Stevens said of Trump’s campaign.

But it’s the overall dismal financial state of the campaign that should worry party leaders, Stevens said.

“Romney raised over $ 100 million a month,” he added. “Without that, you’re out of luck. That’s what turns on the lights. That’s what pays the bills. … The whole thing is a disaster.”

Trump, though, has already started blaming Republicans for not supporting him more enthusiastically.

“It would be nice if the Republicans stuck together,” Trump told NBC News over the weekend. “I’m a different kind of a candidate. I think that I win either way. I can win one way or the other.”

And, at a rally in Las Vegas on Saturday, Trump said that if Republicans don’t come around, he would simply pay for it all himself.

“I’ll keep doing what I’m doing. Funding my own campaign. That’s the easy way,” he said.

Trump claims a net worth of more than $ 10 billion, although independent estimates suggest he is not worth even half of that. What’s more, the vast majority of whatever wealth he may have is tied up in buildings and golf courses, with less than $ 200 million in cash and relatively liquid assets, according to his financial disclosure filings.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Life Lessons From King James

2016-06-20-1466459952-8369230-lebrondunkklay.jpg

LeBron James might or might not be the greatest basketball player of all time. It’s a pointless discussion, for now, because his career isn’t even close to being over.

He’s probably cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players of all time – 3 championships, 3 Finals MVPs, 4 regular season MVPs, and defeating a 73-9 team in the Finals after being down 3-1 while leading everybody in everything and bringing a championship to a city that hasn’t seen one in 52 years will do that.

I have to admit something though. After game 4 – after an odd and frustratingly passive performance from LeBron James, I’d given up on him. I just didn’t think he could do it. LeBron wasn’t playing like the absolute best version of LeBron – which the Cavs needed him to do if they were even going to have a chance – and the next game was at Golden State.

I thought it was over. And I thought it was LeBron’s fault. And I was irrationally angry and upset.

There’s a quote from former NFL coach Bill Parcells that I like:

“You are what you are.”

I thought Game 4 LeBron was LeBron. Passive, not quite willing to do what it takes, a waste of potential. I know – he was already a two-time champion. But two-time champions are supposed to play like two-time champions, aren’t they? And he wasn’t. He was playing like someone less than that.

I don’t need to tell you what happened next. But I will anyway.

Back to back 41-point games, when scoring isn’t even the thing he does best. Three straight wins against the greatest regular season team of all time, a team that hadn’t lost 3 in a row all season. Two wins on the road, in a building where the Warriors went 39 – 2 in the regular season. Leading everybody in everything – points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, which was literally unheard of. His stats in the last three games: 36.3 points per game, 11.7 rebounds per game, 9.7 assists per game, 3.0 blocks per game, and 3.0 steals per game.

Game 5 to 7 LeBron had clearly, well and truly, undeniably vanquished Game 4 LeBron.

Because he had to. Because if winning meant more to him than anything else, including being “himself”, he had to.

It’s like that quote from Henry Sidwick:

“One has to kill a few of one’s natural selves to let the rest grow — a very painful slaughter of innocents.”

And this is what LeBron said after the game, about coming back to Cleveland two years ago, knowing the team had never even been to the playoffs before:

“I told myself, ‘Bron, you gotta be patient’… but I’m not a patient guy.”

He didn’t say he could be patient. Or that he should be patient. Or that he wants to be patient.

He said he had to be patient.

Which meant he had to be something he hadn’t been.

Because his goal – “I set a goal to bring a championship back to the city of Cleveland” – meant more to him than remaining who he was.

I could learn from that. Maybe I’ll have to learn from that.

Here’s what else we have to learn from LeBron James:

“I gave everything that I had. I put my heart and my blood and my sweat and my tears into this game.”

How often do you do that? When I think about that sentence, I honestly kind of doubt it. Can anyone literally give everything they have to anything? I don’t know. Maybe I doubt that anyone could do it because I doubt that I could do it. But I’ve probably, realistically, only felt this way a few times in my whole life. Even though it’s one of the most satisfying feelings I’ve ever had.

“I think about all the doubters. Even with what I’ve been able to do in my career, I still have the same doubters.”

Really, it’s insane that one of the greatest players ever, a three-time champion, a four-time MVP, has doubters. It’s not logical, it’s emotional. Nobody’s career has been scrutinised like LeBron’s – it started when he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated at 16, and it hasn’t stopped since. He has, somehow, against all odds, been even greater than his hype. And people still doubt him. If he still has doubters, then you do too, and you always will.

“During the playoffs, I get off social media. I don’t watch TV. I don’t listen to the radio. Because at the end of the day, the game is won in between these four lines. You can have everybody else talking, everybody else saying what’s going to happen… but the game is won in between these four lines.”

Let everybody else talk. Let them say who’s going to win and who isn’t. Let them gossip about who’s better and who can’t rise to the occasion and who will fail. None of it matters. Not at all. Save your energy for your work.

“I’m my biggest critic.”

If you’re your biggest critic then nobody else can harm you. Your opinion of you means more to you than their opinion of you, so how could they harm you? Their words are just noise – sometimes distracting, but never compelling.

“You practice it every day. Just trust in what you’ve put into the game.”

I worry so much about my writing sometimes. Is it good enough? What if it isn’t? How can I know it’s good enough? When will it be good enough? It’s not good enough. This is shit. Nobody is going to care. And they’ll be right.

It’s exhausting. What’s the point in it? Wouldn’t I be better served by putting my energy into actually writing?

I write every day. Usually for hours. I read every day too. I put a lot of time into it. I put a lot of effort into it. I put a lot of me into it.

I need to get better at trusting myself, and I need to realise that “ego is the enemy” of trusting myself (thanks Ryan Holiday).

“We’ve been through so much adversity these last two years, so I just knew what we were capable of.”

Are you like me, in that you think you can accomplish things without any kind of adversity? I know we all “know” we’ll experience adversity. But do we actually know? Do we actually, with our whole hearts, accept it?

What would happen if we did wholeheartedly accept it? Would there be any downside to that?

Adversity makes us more of who we are because it tests who we are. If we want to get through it, we have to be more. We have to become more. We have to turn adversity to advantage.

Nobody, after they win an NBA championship, says it was easy. Nobody, after writing a book, says it was easy. Nobody, after accomplishing something they desperately wanted to accomplish, says it was easy.

They all talk about how hard it was. How many sacrifices they made. How they wondered whether or not they could actually do this thing that was looking closer and closer to being impossible.

Do you know what else they all say?

They all say it was worth it.

“Cleveland, this is for you.”

We’re back to that cliché of a question, aren’t we.

What’s your why?

It’s a cliché because it’s important.

Is your why big enough to carry you into and through and beyond adversity?

Is it big enough for you to work when you don’t feel like working?

Is it big enough for you to ruthlessly kill the old versions of you that aren’t up to getting the job done?

LeBron James’ why wasn’t about LeBron James.

LeBron James’ why wasn’t even about Cleveland.

LeBron James’ why was Cleveland.

It’s why he came back. It’s why he felt obligated to come back. It’s why he was able to will his team back from a 3-1 deficit against the greatest regular season team in NBA history. It’s why he was able to make history. It’s why he was able to do what he said he was going to do.

It’s why the Cleveland Cavaliers, despite all odds, are the 2016 NBA Champions.

An Open Letter to My Former Psychiatrist: On Being Right

Dear Dr. Right,

You were right. Ten years ago this August, I left your office with my husband, round belly bulging with my nearly full-term first child, cursing your name. It was our first appointment together and you basically told me I was going to fail. When I explained to you that I had been off meds and symptom-free from my bipolar disorder for almost a year and that I wanted to stay off medication to breastfeed, you nodded with a sympathetic smile on your face, scribbled in your notebook and simply said we needed to have a plan.

A plan for which hospital I’d go to when I became manic to the point of needing that level of care. That level of care that you were so sure I’d need.

You were right.

At that stage of my fight, Dr. Right, I was still in denial about the fact that I had been diagnosed with a mental illness. I thought maybe, just maybe, since I had nearly a full year of stability without meds, the past had been a misdiagnosis. Perhaps those eight psychiatrists I had seen over the years since my two hospitalizations for mania were all wrong. I mean, I hadn’t experienced any significant episodes of depression or mania since 2006 and most importantly, I felt solid and stable. Didn’t that count for anything?

Didn’t that make me normal again?

I was so excited to be a mom and every spare moment I had was spent preparing for this new little life who would soon enter the world. His crib was set up, clothes had been washed and lovingly put away, and diapers and wipes sat waiting on the changing table in his nursery. One of the last things on my list was meeting with you, a psychiatrist who agreed to treat me without medication for the remainder of my pregnancy and beyond, according to my wishes.

Man, am I glad we met when we did. Because you were so right. And when the time came, four weeks after his birth, when the compounded lack of sleep and absence of meds in my bloodstream caught up to me in the form of full-blown postpartum psychosis, my husband had someone to call for help.

He called you.

How terrifying it must have been for him to see me unravel the way I did. How helpless he must have felt watching me slowly lose touch with reality, my eyes glazing over, unable to focus on the simplest task of taking a shower or eating a bowl of cereal. And when the psychosis reached its peak, he saw me scrambling to pull together every journal I had ever written in, piling them up before the blazing gas fireplace in our family room like an offering before I died. My legacy, scrawled in ink for my son to read someday since in my mind, I wasn’t going to make it back to the surface. I was hurling to the depths of hell which to me felt like being dragged to the floor of the ocean, my ankles cuffed with a ball and chain pulling me to the bottom. I was sinking faster than I could breathe. And I was so scared it was my day to die and I’d never see my baby again.

Mania to the point of psychosis can do this to a person.

I was taken under a Temporary Detention Order to the Emergency Room where I was held handcuffed to the bed. The doctors and nurses eventually determined I was a threat to myself or others and the green light was given to find me a bed. I was lucky, beds aren’t always available, as the Deeds’ family tragedy unfortunately proved. I only had to wait overnight and the next morning I was transferred to our local hospital’s geriatric psych ward, the only open bed in the surrounding area.

I made it through. It wasn’t easy, in fact, it was pretty awful being in a psych ward for a week of my new baby’s life. My mental illness had landed a forceful blow to the gut, showing me it was in control of my body. Still, wandering the halls at night I’d stumble, groggy from the antipsychotics, to the nurses station to ask for another dose of whatever sleeping pill they could give me. I knew sleep was my friend in there. After a week, I got well with your help, and with support from my husband and family.

Once home, I focused on getting stable. I followed my treatment plan and took my meds religiously. Then it happened again. I thought I knew what was best for my next baby. I didn’t. Acute mania reared its ugly head to the point of psychosis, repeating the nightmare a year and a half later when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter because I had stopped my medication.

You were right again. At five weeks pregnant I landed in the psych ward again.

Those days are tough for me to look back on, the times I was in the hospital and the weeks and months of recovery afterwards. But I wouldn’t trade them for anything because they are a part of who I am now and they tell the story of how I’ve evolved. Those slices of my life do not define me, but when added into everything else that makes me the person I am today, I am grateful for those agonizing, terrifying, heart-wrenching experiences.

You are the expert when it comes to psychiatry, Dr. Right. Me, I’m just the patient. During one of our sessions, I brought up whether or not to disclose my mental illness, and I asked for your opinion. Of course only I could make that call. You expressed the same sadness that so many in this world share over the injustice mentally ill people experience when they expose their conditions. I was looking for justification that it would be okay if I wrote openly about what I had been through, but I didn’t get that from you. In fact, you recommended that I keep my illness hidden, lest I be discriminated upon because of it. Once more, it was as if I were hearing “destined to fail” all over again.

Good thing I didn’t listen that time.

I’m writing now, Dr. Right. Remember when I told you I wanted to write a book? Well, I still do, but first I’ve started self-publishing online, to gain experience. I have a blog, and over the past two years my readership has grown tremendously, all organically, due to my dedication to sharing my story in order to help others.

I’ve met so many incredible people through blogging and social media. It blows my mind how I can write about the struggles I’ve gone through and in return, I get emails from people saying, “Me too!” and “Thank you so much for being so brave.” My heart is blissfully content because I know I’ve uncovered my purpose in life and my words are having an impact on people, a positive impact. I can feel it. And every time I put my thoughts out there for the world to read, my voice grows a little stronger.

I’ve created a show and non-profit organization called This Is My Brave where others like me who live with mental illness can stand up on stage and share our personal stories, our suffering and our breakthroughs, the hope we’ve found in long-term recovery. This is our chance to show the world our vulnerability in an effort to raise awareness and acceptance.

For years after I was handed my diagnosis I feared the backlash of people who knew me finding out about my mental illness. Conversations were uncomfortable, I cared too much about what other people thought of me. It didn’t take me very long to realize that living in fear is not really living. Taking off my armor and choosing to expose myself and my story was one of the best decisions I ever made about my mental health and my life in general.

Revealing my vulnerability freed me to follow my dreams.

And I have you to thank. Thank you for being right. Thank you for letting me fall. Thank you for being there when I needed you. Finally, thank you for doubting me and advising me to stay silent. Because I needed my chance to prove someone wrong and you were that person for me.

Respectfully yours,
Jennifer Marshall (your patient from 2008-2011)

Nipple Confusion, Uncoordinated Pooping, and Spittle: The Life of a Newborn's Father

Nipple Confusion, Uncoordinated Pooping, and Spittle: The Life of a Newborn's Father

For new babies, there are the first-year milestones that everyone talks about-baby''s first smile, first steps, and first words-and then there are all the firsts that everyone conveniently forgets to mention. The first time you find yourself hanging around the baby store parking lot, waiting for the doors to open so you can make an emergency breast pump purchase. The first time you discover that girls, too, can shoot pee across the changing table when you''re least expecting it. And the first time you discover baby poop smeared on your tie moments before you need to leave for work (and it was your wife, not you, who changed the poopy diaper). It''s not surprising that firsts like this leave you feeling like you''re on your own as a new father, and that perhaps you should have skimmed one or two of your partner''s what-to-expect books that appeared everywhere around the house over the course of her pregnancy.

With Nipple Confusion, Uncoordinated Pooping, and Spittle: The Life of a Newborn''s Father, Roger Friedman wonderfully captures all of his daughter''s firsts in an often humorous, sometimes poignant, and occasionally grown-up manner. It''s an enjoyable, honest account of the confusing, terrifying, and downright messy world of parenthood.

What an evening
I just had
My car broke down
was truly bad …

It happened
on a rainy day
With no assistance
on my way …

The Friday traffic
was so thick
When suddenly
I heard a click …

Then soon a cluck
a clock a clack
The sounds just coming
front and back …

Was this A
Punctured Tire OR
Some loose equipment?
Open Door ??

I searched and looked
yet all the while
Just thinking
of the many miles …

I still needed
To get back home
By then it felt
I lived in Rome !!!

For soon a tunnel
way too long
My mind I calmed
though barely strong …

Just praying that
The Dark would clear
For can’t imagine
all my Fear …

If Only Then
My Car would stop
My Tire burst
My Engine pop …

I’d be stuck right
within my track
No moving forwards
turning back …

No getting out
to check my state
The cars beside me
plate by plate …

Just zooming at
their highest speed
The mileage sign !!
Can someone read ?? …

Then slowly
at a turtle’s pace
I finally see
A clear grey space …

An Opening
the tunnels end
My house would be
just past the bend …

When suddenly
a final jolt
As if had lost
a major bolt …

My car just stopped
refusing to
Do anything
I asked to do …

But luckily
the roadside clear
I thank you yet
my darling dear …

At least we aren’t
blocking all
The speeding cars
both big and small …

So called the guys
who came and towed
My little car
up off the road …

Straight to the workshop
need to mend
For Been neglecting
My Best Friend !

Although the Doc
had told me so
The many things
I ought to know …

A small change here
a small fix there
I couldn’t find time
A n y w h e r e …

Just left it thinking
It’s ok
Until Ofcourse
thus came TODAY …

My Nissan saying
That’s Enough
Can’t keep pretending
I’m that tough …

I need my rest
My Breaktime too
We all must have
a day in lieu …

To just unwind
To just relax
Not Doing Dashing
Taxing back …

So now I have
No Car to drive
But it’s ok
I will survive …

Will pick her up
when alls been done
This weekend though
might have to RUN !

Flint, Michigan Water Risks Will Be Long Term, EPA Warns

The city of Flint faces multiple long-term threats to its water supply, even though short-term progress has been made in reducing lead contamination in the drinking water, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has warned the city and the state of Michigan.

The poor water quality became a crisis last year when, after months of citizen complaints in the largely poor and African-American city, officials acknowledged a problem and began corrective measures.

EPA administrator Gina McCarthy outlined at least five areas that would require additional funding and attention to ensure a safe and sustainable drinking water supply in a letter sent to Flint Mayor Karen Weaver and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.

The letter, dated Thursday, noted that short-term efforts have produced “hopeful and encouraging signs” but that significant long-term challenges remain, such as the need for more money, a reliable city administration, and a decision on what Flint’s long-term water source should be.

In addition, the city’s water treatment plant is inadequately staffed and the distribution system is oversized, which lessens the effectiveness of chlorine used to treat pathogens, the letter said.

“The time has come for the city and the state to address those challenges. Safe drinking water cannot be reliably achieved without tackling those challenges,” McCarthy said.

Flint’s mayor on Friday agreed with many of the EPA’s conclusions and said additional funding from the state was needed to comply.

“We not only need new pipes, we need new infrastructure,” Weaver said in a statement. “That’s money that must come from the state.”

The state has provided more than $ 234 million for Flint’s water crisis in the past nine months, a spokeswoman for the governor said.

“We continue to work closely with the city and the federal government to find solutions to challenges residents face, including a long-term water source,” Press Secretary Anna Heaton said.

Flint was under control of a state-appointed emergency manager in April 2014 when it switched its source of water from Detroit’s municipal system to the Flint River to save money.

The river water was more corrosive than Detroit system’s and caused more lead to leach from its aging pipes. Lead can be toxic and children are especially vulnerable. The city switched back in October after blood tests found lead in some children.

The Boston Globe’s Powerful Message On Gun Violence: ‘Make It Stop’

The Boston Globe, like many U.S. news outlets, is sick of the seemingly endless stream of mass shootings.

In response to the weekend massacre in Orlando, Florida, that left 49 people dead, the Globe tweeted a preview of its powerful front page for Thursday’s edition. Alongside a headline that reads “Make It Stop,” the page features a full-size image of a military-style AR-15 rifle, a weapon of war similar to the semi-automatic carbine used by the Orlando shooter to kill dozens at a gay nightclub early Sunday.

A single, to-scale bullet hole is shown just below the gun’s ammunition magazine.

The newspaper’s front page, accompanied by an editorial, adds to this week’s blistering attacks on lax gun laws that make it easy to acquire a firearm designed for the battlefield. (Multiple news outlets have purchased semi-automatic rifles since the Orlando shooting — including The Huffington Post — often in a few minutes.)

Such a message has made its way from late-night programs hosted by Samantha Bee and Conan O’Brien to the editorial pages of USA Today and the cover of the New York Daily News.

President Barack Obama has called for Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban, an appeal also championed by presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and challenger Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).  A Democratic filibuster over gun control took over the Senate on Wednesday night.

Despite these calls, as well as surveys that show a majority of Americans support a nationwide ban on assault weapons, presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump has instead called for a ban on Muslims entering the United States.

The NRA, in turn, blames Obama for the Orlando attack and said the president was “desperate to create the illusion that they’re doing something to protect us.”

“This transparent head-fake should scare every American,” Chris W. Cox, the head of the NRA’s lobbying arm wrote. “Because it will do nothing to prevent the next attack.”

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

The No. 1 Tool Busy Entrepreneurs Need (And No, It’s Not A New Tech Gadget)

It takes a certain type of character to be an entrepreneur. It’s a character that thrives in chaos, sees huge risk as huge reward, and is deeply excited by whatever endeavor they are launching. For many entrepreneurs the time period before their idea becomes a totally solid business is so thrilling that it is almost an addiction. As soon as the to-do list is clear, calm can feel eerily uncomfortable.

There are lists and lists of what helps an entrepreneur be successful. This software can help you organize your priorities, this book can help you lead your team, this motivational poster will help you beat your competition, etc. But all these tools will fall short for the entrepreneur who is at the mercy of their own mind. For the person who carries the “entrepreneur for life” card, there is only one real tool (and it requires no fancy technology) that you need and that is to learn to meditate.

People think meditation is about not having thoughts and relaxing. It is 100% the opposite. It brings a more awakened state to your consciousness and therefore all your actions. It allows the mind to use more of its ability, making the meditator more effective at everything that they do.

Here are some of the ways meditation actually translates into results:

OBJECTIVITY. Being an entrepreneur can often feel like if you add one more thing to what you are doing the entire tower you are balancing on your pinky finger might collapse. Meditation settles the mind so you can more objectively see if all the blocks stacked in the tower actually have to be there or not. After cultivating a meditation practice you might see some blocks might need to be removed or perhaps some blocks should be rearranged. Meditation helps you build a solid foundation and ensures there are no cracks as you build upwards.

REACTIVITY. It’s natural to think that if you react stronger or faster that an outcome will get done quicker or match more closely your intention. However for an entrepreneur being quick to react can sometimes lead to careless mistakes which can lead to loss of resources and time. Meditation helps you learn to create space between what you are observing and your reaction time. That space between action and reaction carries huge potential; being able to be in that space longer can literally change the outcome of a situation from a total triumph to a total disaster.

PRODUCTIVITY. There is never enough time. Ever. For an entrepreneur this is a fact. And one of the most sacrificed commodities for a busy entrepreneur is sleep. Unfortunately lack of sleep and over caffeinating doesn’t make for more getting accomplished. Meditation is a powerful way to deeply rest the body and mind. When you are meditating you are consciously resting which recuperates your being. If you feel you don’t have time for meditation, by meditating you become more effective so that you actually get time back.

There are a variety of techniques for meditating. Approach learning mediation like you would learning anything new. Take a course or a class-online or in person. Find a technique that will work for you and stick with it. Make the time to meditate and you will reap the benefits, guaranteed.

How To Get Over Rejection (And Your Ex) In 3 Minutes

When your partner leaves you, getting over the heartbreak can feel like an impossible task.

What you may need to process the pain is a change in perspective, philosopher Alain de Botton says in a new illustrated video from The School of Life.

“Don’t attempt to minimize what’s happened,” he says. “Being brave has no place here. Allow your sadness so much room, so much time, so many melancholic songs, hot baths and indulgent meals, you eventually bore yourself back into an appetite for life.”

Once you’ve acknowledged your sadness and had some good cries, try not to blame your ex too harshly for the breakup.

“It isn’t a question of them not trying hard enough,” de Botton says. “Remove morality from it. They were not being bad for not loving nor were you good for wanting them. You were both on a search for pleasure that took you on different and conflicting routes.”

Watch the video above for more tips for moving on once and for all.

With the Band (Luminescent Juliet)

With the Band (Luminescent Juliet)

When they get an offer to join a national tour, the musicians of Luminescent Juliet finally find their ticket to fame. But for Sam, the band’s dazzling but troubled bassist, making sure his past stays locked away feels more important than winning the spotlight. Then Peyton, a budding music journalist, joins the tour, tasked with chronicling the band’s every move. She and Sam have a history, one that has made them enemies. Neither wants to deal with old pain and misunderstanding, and they agree to keep the past in the past. This is more than fine with Peyton?after all, it’ll only help reassure her picture-perfect boyfriend back on campus that following the band is all totally professional.Yet being forced to look at Sam in a new way brings Peyton a different perspective on the past?and his magnetic baby-blues and rippling muscles are hard to ignore. When the tour kicks into high gear, the real truth about their shared past comes to light, and Peyton is rocked by forces as passionate and chaotic as the music she loves. This book is intended for mature teen audiences due to strong language and some sexual content.
